If there was a draft - in the US - our citizens would be paying close attention to the moves of our government and we would have (in my opinion) Never gone down the road we are on now.  War, let's fight it with someones else's kids so I don't have to care...
What POSSIBLE selfish reasons can there be to want (a draft) equality in service to ones country?
Struck me kinda funny - that an AFFer would like neither the LEFT (leftist idiots) or the Right "Wing" -  categorizing people using just one term - I would think that being accepting of opposing views and letting people have the freedom to voice them would be important to all of us here.
I don't recall anyone thinking that if GWB was elected there would be a draft - that is the third rail in politics - and the democrats don't have a simple majority - Lieberman turned independent - it's a tie 50/50 with cheney as the tie breaker. No one thinks they can get a draft passed with Bush in the whitehouse... I respectfully disagree with you Dogbrain.

Should there be a draft, I say yes.

Given I'm not American, some may say that I should keep out of this thread.  However, I think the reintroduction of the draft would likely have the effect of keeping the US military out of other countries!

If more of the population were faced with the reality of their own boys and girls coming home in body bags or alive, but mutilated, more serious questions may be asked about US military action and involvement.

oh come now, you thought the same thing.

I thought it was a rather unbecoming photo.  I would sue...

I think its some kind of Z-lister, some Big Brother reject in all probablilty.
besides, its too late.

putting stuff on the internet is like peeing in a swimming pool. you cant get it back out again.

I support a draft. Service to one's country should be spread evenly, in an all volunteer military you have a lot of people joining just because they are from economically depressed areas, basically the poor are fighting wars for rich special interests. A draft will also make the American people more careful about supporting a war because they won't be able to comfort themselves with the "they are volunteers so they knew the risks" canard.
not clicking the link, brief summary?
I meant, if the Republic dies.... I quite possibly will

yeah, poor people do enlist voluntarily because they view the military as a job.

When I was a freshman in high school, I dated an older boy, who was graduation age.  His friends had really enjoyed high school.  Not in the "study and do well" way, but in the "party hard and have fun" way.  None of them had any possibilities for any scholarships, and none of them had parents who could afford to pay for college without the scholarships.  Not only that, they would be looking at junior college and then a transfer later to another college.  Some of them had very straightforward requests from their parents to move on out.  There was nothing else in the works for them but a part time job at Taco Bell or McDonalds, struggling to pay bills and for the j.c. too.  Out of the group of boys, 4 went into the military.  2 are lifers, and 2 got out and went their own way.  None of them saw any better choices.

The American people have a negative view of conscription.  I think because the last time it was used it was used in a discretionary war (Vietnam) when the Vietnamese only wanted the French (and us) off their backs.  Also the draft was class discriminatory as it allowed college and graduate students to defer military service.  What a sour taste in one's mouth.

And if the draft is ever used again, some kid is going to wonder, what, another discretionary **** war?

I oughtta do a cartoon: DRAFT, behind glass, Use Only in Case of National Emergency

Then the young people would say, gee, it really is a national emergency, I will sign up, even if I die.
Also, we can't **** enforce immigration law, 12 million illegal immigrants running around.  Also the young people who don't register for the draft aren't prosecuted, simply denied federal student aid, federal jobs, federal job training, and in case of non citizens, citizenship, and moreover, irreversibly so on and after the 26th birthday.

Another disincentive to follow orders if you do get orders to report for processing.

I am beginning to wonder if the Star Wars saga is a warning for America.

So this is how freedom dies, to a round of applause.
