I saw some of it. At first it looked okay cuz they talked about trying to raise money to fund support services for autistics. But then one performer leaving the stage said "We must find a cure". I was unclear on whether the cure idea was just some of the performers saying that or the purpose of the event or if the performers were confused thinking that the two ideas are the same thing. I found it too depressing to watch more than a few minutes.
Darn. It was my favorite channel for cheer.

I just looked it up. The website has highlight clips of the show. Good and bad news. Good on some of the things they will fund. Bad that some of the money goes to Autism Speaks. It is one of the 3 site links about autism from there. Grrrr.

From the Comedy Central site:
About Autism
Autism is a lifelong neurological disorder, which makes it painfully difficult for children to function in the world around them. Autism robs children of their ability to communicate and to understand. Even simple play with others is often impossible. One in 150 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and the number of new cases is exploding. There is no cure.
Evening Benefits Night of Too Many Stars will benefit a variety of autism education programs to support the growing numbers of autistic children who desperately need appropriate schools.
Funds raised will support new schools that have just opened their doors as well as existing schools that are now developing innovative programs, providing vocational and life skills for teenagers and adults with autism. Proceeds will also support outreach programs that provide training and consultation to families of very young children with autism in their homes.
A portion of proceeds will go to Autism Speaks, an organization dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention and treatments for autism. Autism Speaks aims to raise public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society, and mobilize the autism community to urge the government and private sector to address this global health crisis.

grr...no wonder people see us as lesser than human when you have things like this being written about autism. autism didn't rob me of anything. i guess they still think it's developmental stasis and possibly the myth that autism is this monster that robs children in the night of their life. i'm communicating and understanding that this is degrading garbage that is being spewed out. so is supporting autism speaks.

I'm really pissed off, I love Superbad and feel betrayed that one of the actors hates Autism. This charity event isn't entirely negative, most of their money does go to funding Autistic school and general support for Autistic people. However their information is wrong and their spreading misconceptions. This event should not have joined forces with Autism Speaks which spends tonnes of money educating people about negative and false information about Autism. I am so angry.

Yeah, and some of the funds go to "biomedical research for prevention". Yuck. Why couldn't they just stick to education?

Their description of autism is even worst than the Autism Speaks description. :O

Most of it sounded good. At least they are providing services like job training for adults. Almost everyone ignores adults. I think the ongoing problem with stars getting on the charity bandwagon of whatever "disease" is popular is that they think they are doing something good for a good cause because they don't know any better.
When I look at that list I wonder if it was an effort to ride the middle ground by spreading the money among all areas and both sides. Rather like United Way spreads their money to benefit many causes.
So, this brings up an issue. If a company or celebrity who has worked to provide us with something we want... especially when almost nobody else has... like adult services, should we punish or trash them due to part of their funds also going to curbie camp? Is it all or nothing?

Well, I don't consider such an event to be worthless, as some of their funds are going to very good things, which I will continue to support. That doesn't mean it won't leave a bad taste in my mouth for the negative way they present autism and that some of their money goes towards prevention.
