I saw this on a journalism forum and thought it was quite a good idea.  (I've randomly put @ in it so that anyone Googling for information about it won't be directed here.)  I think other people have previously suggested something along a similar line.  Problem is though, that something like these people have much more funds at their disposal.

The European School of Oncology is awarding a prize to promote excellence in c@ncer journalism.

There will be a top prize of €10,000 and two runners up prizes of €5,000. All winning articles will be published in ESO's C@ncer World magazine.

A lot of these kinds of things raise the money for the prize from the actual entry fees... some of these journo awards cost a ridiculous amount to enter.  Even if there's not a huge cash prize and all they get is a certificate and a free book, there'll be some out there who'd enter for the kudos rather than cash (ie me!).  I think it's a brilliant idea.

One tip, if we do decide to go down that path... please don't make it too hard or expensive to enter.  The last awards I thought about entering, but gave up on, wanted ten (count 'em, ten) copies of the entry each on their own CD, and a $250 entry fee.
