They are expensive because NJ's government is throwing money at stuff and bloating what the actual cost would be - much like is the case with health costs. These are not real costs, in my district public school the cost to educate 1 high school student $18,000 a year (we only pay 14,500 local/state the federal governmetn is paying the rest.  Every level of goernment in the buerocracy that gets involved, increases the cost. As my aspie son John said at age 8, "it is like the blob, it feeds itself and gets bigger, so it has to feed itself more" Because the system is broken (the political/educational). When does an aspirin cost $25.00?... When you are in the hospital.  (not a joke)
pakrat, US schools are not funded poorly - some are managed poorly, parents are distracted by jobs, etc., etc., tv, etc., etc., taxes, etc., tenure for teachers has not been good as there doesn't sem to be anyway to get rid of teachers who are burnt out.  See earlier posts on dollar amounts spent per child per year...

The money isn't being managed well.  They are laying off the wrong people.  The mnay layers of administrators etc., are ciphoning the resources from where they are needed. The teachers aren't making the money, the many layers of government are consuming the money like the blob.  The end result, the administrators firing not themsleves, of course, but the teachers,  is the same though, I concede that and agree with you.  Just want to say it is not the lack of money.
(similar to health care, the nurses and even the doctors aren't making 25% more per year -the rate that costs have been going up per year it is the insurance companies - the management, that is raking in all the dough...)
