The world wide protests that are greeting the Olympic torch relay are starting to become a real embarrassment for China. Down here in Australia they're now calling for people to line the streets when the torch comes and then turn their back on it as it passes, in silent protest.
You watch the show our protesters put on when it comes to Australia. It should be good. I'd love to be there holding up a sign that said: "I could be shot if I did this in Tibet."
However, I think the torch will only be passing through Canberra and I'm in Melbourne.
Nationalism is just racism in a ball gown. And you can't compare China's invasion of Tibet with the West's immigration policies.
Simen - wow, I haven't read such a statement that hI havae found so profoundly true in a while. Thanks for saying it. ( I am from the US)
Is is possible that AFFers or aspies tned toward being more supportive of those that are anarchists or revolitionaries or conscientious objectors - like it is a gene - a revolutionary gene? Maybe (they/autistics) come from people who are less "Convertional wisdom" sorts... less of the go along with the pack people...
I mean this thread (seemingly) has not much to do with AFF but sure does bring out alot of interesting thoughts and feelings...
My father started out as a an immigrant, then became a protester/hippie of the 60's, then became a republican capitalist, now is a typical baby-boomer who does yoga and new age...was thrilled when the dalai lama took out a million dollar whole page ad in the New York Times (around the year 2000) decrying war and oil and poverty - and that it would only take 6 Billion daollars to end poverty and hate. ( My dad has money so he pretends to be an independent but votes republican). Maybe I should write a book. Too boring? , oh well!
Creasy redux, I disagree with you because there is something to draw a comparison from; both China-in-Tibet and the British government have clearly denied the people the opportunity to vote on whether or not they want mass immigration.
There has never been a democratic mandate, but yet again, the moneyed interest dictates to us whether or not we will go to war, take in thousands of immigrants or whatever their latest liberal free trade project is.
All of this is for an economic system which working and middle class people never even get a fair deal from.
We get the government we deserve.
