Basically, the 14 year old autistic girl was using facilitated communication to communicate with her teacher in class, and under the guidance of her aide typed sexual abuse allegations against her parents and 13 year old brother. The court determined that the aide had directed her subtly to type the allegations, and the case was dropped. Now, FC has been dismissed by real professionals for a decade, yet the school was still using it. Recently, an American news program profiled a girl with cerebral palsy who was supposedly writing incredible poems with FC. They showed her "writing" on TV, and I would say that 90-95% of the "writing" was being done by her mother. This shows you the harm that the witch doctor brigade can do if they're allowed to run riot. Deaths from chelation, sexual abuse allegations written by attention seeking aides.
Echoes here of "false memory" accusations, but this would have been so much easier to deal with quickly and simply by employing another communication facilitator to see whether the accusations were repeated.  It seems extraordinary that this simple step wasn't taken as soon as the allegations were made.

How do you know if her mother wrote it...?

Ok, YOU decide whether this "amazing achievement" is real or not:

Video included, as well as samples of her supposed "writing", showing a skill far beyond that of a normal 10 year old, much less one with cerebral palsy. Watch, then you tell me if it's real.

Has anyone ever seen someone talk to their facilitator using facilitated typing?

Is the main benefit from FC a mechanical one? Is it just to help the typist steady and aim? If so, shouldn't it be possible to create some sort of mechanical sleeve or something to help? Or simply make bigger keys?

Just thinking outloud.
Earthmonkey, when did you get so proficient at typing?  john avoides it as he is slow.  He is able bodied enough, but not patient enough to learn it properly yet.

I once measured my vocabulary using a dictionary and some instructions on how to estimate vocabulary size, both receptive and expressive.  It said that everyone has better understanding of language than use of language.  In my case, even then, and even in writing which is my best way of doing it, I only understood 4/5 of the words I could and did write regularly.  I also tested in childhood as having receptive language as one of my lowest scores and expressive among the highest.

This is a common pattern among hyperlexics, if anyone's curious.

I do that.
sometimes, i'll use a word, not entirely sure of what exactly it means, but knowing when and in what context to use it in.

does the ability to read Lord of the Rings in two days (as in,start wednesday, finish thursday) count towards hyperlexia? I was able to do that aged 9....
