Earthmonkey, I love the quote you have by LAura Tisoncik. I have used it a couple times speaking and once I posted it - properly attributed it.
I saw LKL when Mccarthy was on and I got some mad I threw one of my 500 page books at the TV[/code].
That stupid scumbag normacy idiot.
Joker write: "--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain. ****************************************************
Did you write that joker, if not, do you know who did? I agree with you joker on the mud slinging thing , to what end? Maybe it is the great perosnality quirk of singlemindedness that makes it more difficult for some posters on here to see both sides and that there may be an opportunity for good to ome out of the differences- by engaging...

My sons "regression" following a regular start in life immediately followed his MMR as well. That is her experience, you can't change that. Some of the passionate feelings against her personally, would possibly be better aimed against the "doctors" and "professionals" that don't explain (because they are with the AMA - and are not allowed, or are afraid to be sued, or are just ignorant sheep) , that don't divulge/explain to parents anything that is not on the "script" they were given. That parents, who really just want to help to reach their kid again, end up finding information that you/we/AFF don't agree with is not a sin, it's just the reality right now.
Information can combat disinformation, but it needs to be in a constructive way.
(Though venting is good!)
Joker, that was very eloquent, but disingenuous.
The 'cure', so far, for any genetic difference has been the removal from the gene pool of the genes deemed to be 'at fault'. Genetic counselling aims to persuade 'carrier' parents to refrain from reproducing.
What cure has been developed for Down Syndrome? Yet there is a great reduction in its incidence. That is because Down Syndrome is one of the differences tested for during pregnancy, and approximately 93% of people with Down Syndrome are killed before birth. There is still no cure for people already born, despite decades of research.
Whenever the genetic cause of any difference has been isolated and identified, a pre-natal test leading to abortion has followed. Why do you think that autism would be different?
Down's Syndrome is straightforward and easy to test, and you either have it or you don't. Autism is endless shades and even if we find the genetic cause it'll certainly be too complicated to terminate any fetus with impunity. I imagine the best you'd get would be 'this child has a X percent chance of having severely disabling autism and X chance of having a less serious spectrum disorder and X chance of coming out NT"

Not actually true, there are degrees of Down Syndrome just as there are for Autism. Most of the truly disabling aspects of DS is in co-morbids that can be operated on (such as heart and tongue defects). A properly supported education deals with the rest. Most people, when they hear the word "Autism" have the same reaction to it as you appear to do to DS; they imagine the worst-case scenario, because that is what is publicised by the 'charities'.
Ok, so substitute 'Down Syndrome' for 'trisomy 21' in that post and what I said is true; and they're technically the same thing.
no edit buttonblah.
By 'easy to test for' I meant compared to autism.
I would say The Secret is a bunch of bourgeois nonsense (and since no one is likely to make me read that sentence aloud, I can say it.) A useful philosophy for whiny middle-class people so long as they only apply it to themselves.
As to 'perfect babies,' I can see where people would want their offspring (who are, in part, a continuation of themselves) to have at least all the advantages they did, more if possible. Also, raising a disabled child would be difficult (though raising a regular child could easily be just as difficult, possibly more, but most parents probably don't take this into account.) I don't agree with this, but it's useful to see where the other side comes from.
M - I like your distinction between empathy and compassion - intellectual identification of oneself with others vs. sypathy over the distress of another. I had to look up empathy as I previously thougt empathy- root word pathos /latin feelings, as the same as compassion. I never noticed the distinction befroe thank you.
I agree with you that there is a tendency towards a lack of respect for human beings these days. A seeming epidemic of disability in the brains of many, an inability to be accepting and amenable to others outside of their own narrow definition of worthy or worthwhile.
Oh THIS subject won't end up in flames...
Oh, ouch, what an insult.
But didn't they already get treated for it?
I understand there's one in the white house hahahaha
Well, I thought that's why Cheney did all the thinking, until he became one too...
Well I just learned not to go hunting with a politician.
