Waaaaaayyyyyyy too long to post here.

Is it interesting in relation autism?

I'm not using this to say that autism isn't a disability, but I find that there's still many things in common in general debate about autism. I am ofcourse not using this analogy to say that gayness is a disability either... Rolleyes

Some headlines I found from Google from 1960-1980 on gayness:

Actually, there is quite a bit of research being done into the genetic cause of sexuality. I view this research as largely positive though as it shuts up the "homosexuality is an abomination and unnatural" crowd.

Who is funding this research?   But at least they don't have the stupid ads that autism squeaks and all run.

Think it's mostly some american lunatics who use christianity as an excuse.

I saw this show a while back.

Ok after reading the article maybe not, dunno.

I think a prenatal test for being gay is less of a threat because it doesn't have as much of the stigma as autism.

Well, that's OK then - the way two men make love *isn't* the (usual) way a man and woman do.

It's all in the interpretation...

By the way, GuessWho - I owe you an apology for biting your head off in the 5 Things thread (I can't find it now) a few weeks ago.  I misinterpreted what you said and reacted inappropriately, and I apologise.  Sorry, mate.

Ethel

Yeah, I miss Max, too.  I hope he's OK - he had a lot of big stuff going on the last time he posted.  Actually, I stole the 'lie together' joke from post 39 from him, it was too good not to recycle if we're going to have the same 'thou shall burn in hell for eternity and if you don't like me saying it take it up with God' discussions.

Sorry, returning you now to the topic:

Ethel

Actually, some Christian denominations promote said practice as an alternative to abstinence for couples wishing to avoid pregnancy.

(Well, that's what a currently-active Christian told me, and since it was said in the midst of a sensible discussion I'm assuming he was telling the truth.)
</sarcasm?>
GuessWho, be carefull not to provoke anybody. I wouldn't like this thread to become yet another argument about sexuality.

For homosexuality, the discovery of a genetic cause destroys the idea that it's a choice (the fact that even if one could choose it wouldn't matter anyway is another issue). For autistics, genetic research has much greater danger.

Because homosexuality is now more widely accepted. Homosexuals often face prejudice due to the flawed belief that heterosexuality is "more natural" and that they have chosen a perversion. (Yet it doesn't matter even if it is unnatural - homosexuality harms none).

As for abortion due to prenatal testing - a prenatal test for homosexuality would be just as bad, but that is not the stated purpose of researchers in the field. The stated purpose of genetic researchers working with autism however is "prevention".

Raised the same point in #15 and it got criticized.

Not sure what you're talking about.
