It seems to me that this site and "autism speaks" only represent the two extremes of opinions on the subject of AS and other things on the spectrum. It's disheartening to see as I was hoping to find people like myself who are in the middle.

I don't believe that autism is a disease or that it is caused by something so ridiculous as mercury poisoning. However, I do not believe that we are merely "different" without any specific cause. Something certainly causes autism and I believe it could be prevented in the future. There is no cure, nor will there ever be. These are just my opinions however.

I'm quite frustrated by seeing only people who denounce autism or celebrate it fervently with pride. It's disconcerting
If you were interested in debating the causes, I'd say the initial cause is genetics, and that twin studies have all but proven it.

Otherwise, as far as finding a position between celebrating or denouncing autism, the middle ground is usually "it just kind of is". Probably the reason that you don't see much about this middle ground is that there's not much to say about it - people that believe this generally talk about autism without making a stand on it one way or another, which makes them hard to spot.

I'm pretty sure that there's quite a few people like that on this site, and some will be tempted out of the woodwork to comment on this thread...

If you were looking for a site that represents the middle ground you're talking about, the closest thing would be "wrong planet" - they're basically an autistic chat site, and they don't really get into the politics of autism quite as much.

In any case, feel free to stick around, and welcome aboard!

I've no interest in debating. I find that regardless of how well your argument is posed that the opposition never waivers and is inevitably an exercise in futility.

That's fair enough - I would have posted more, as you've mentioned causes in your initial post, but I thought I'd see if it was something you were interested in first.

I'm not really too worried about convincing you, if you're not planning on "denouncing" autism - interested without celebrating is fine.

Anyways, feel free to have a look around, and see if you like the place.

Interested? I have AS. Interested isn't exactly a term I'd use.

so, just to clarify;

are you saying AS is a good, a bad, or a neutral thing?

Aspergers is a pain in the ass. It has it's ups and downs so it can't be classified as good or bad. However I don't exactly consider it a blessing(or a curse.)

but it really can be down to personal experience, no?

I myself wouldnt give up my AS if you paid me; in that sense, I am quite militant.

however, I do have problems with hygiene, organisation, executive disorder, and sleep.

but then, my benefits have outweighed my drawbacks; I have a skill, hyperlexia, photographic memory, pictorial thinking, a touch of olfactory and auditory synaesthesia, am extremely thin, and so on and so forth.
