my local nbc station has been promoting 'autism speaks week south florida' since yesterday, and it's on like every commercial break now, it's the 'if you help autism speaks and their auction, you will help find a cure' and the 'autism epidemic' myth. i know that it started yesterday and runs through saturday, and has this pity message all over it, capped with a saturday auction (it's probably airing on tv) from 8-11 pm et. i'm thinking about doing a autism speaks boycott in response to this.
i can't find the link right now, but it should be on the miami's nbc affiliate site.
There are actually very few public services in South Florida for autism. It seems as though Asperger's in particular is not very recognised down there from my own past experiences.
I'm at a loss for words, this upsets me.

there are few child based services in south florida period. this area has traditionally been catered to the rich and retired population (this is all over the southern half of florida), and has some of the worst education around. thankfully, i didn't move down here until i entered college.
but to support autism speaks disgusts me, to support an organization that would condone child murder and demean the autistics isn't really in the best interests of anyone.
I live in South Florida, and can ditto that. There are very few services for children in general. I think one of the few professional facilities for children with autism there is at the University of Miami. Instead, my parents traveled out of state multiple times with me to receive help and guidance from the University of Chicago.
I haven't been watching NBC 6 much though, so I haven't seen the ad yet.
I take it that if there are few services for children, there must be NO services for adults with autism.
