'Something Better Change' by The Stranglers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAa43TtJPCo

Here are the lyrics.  Would need some tweaking to be an anthem.

Don't You Like The Way I Move When You See Me?
Don't You Like The Things That I Say?
Don't You Like The Way I Seem To Enjoy It?
When You Shout Things But I Don't Care
Something's Happening And It's Happening Right Now
You're Too Blind To See It
Something's Happening And It's Happening Right Now
Ain't Got Time To Wait

I Said Something Better Change
I Said Something Better Change
I Said Something Better Change
I Said Something Better Change

Don't You Like The Way I Dance?
Does It Bug You?
Don't You Like The Cut Of My Clothes?
Don't You Like The Way I Seem To Enjoy It?
Stick My Fingers Right Up Your Nose
Something's Happening And It's Happening Right Now
You're Too Blind To See It
Something's Happening And It's Happening Right Now
Ain't Got Time To Wait

I Said Something Better Change
I Said Something Better Change
I Said Something Better Change
I Said Something Better Change

Helen
I've got another one

This was one my favourite song in the 80's when I was growing up.

'We're Not Going to Take It' by Twisted Sister

Oh We're Not Gonna Take It
no, We Ain't Gonna Take It
oh We're Not Gonna Take It Anymore

we've Got The Right To Choose And
there Ain't No Way We'll Lose It
this Is Our Life, This Is Our Song
we'll Fight The Powers That Be Just
don't Pick Our Destiny 'cause
you Don't Know Us, You Don't Belong

oh We're Not Gonna Take It
no, We Ain't Gonna Take It
oh We're Not Gonna Take It Anymore

oh You're So Condescending
your Gall Is Never Ending
we Don't Want Nothin', Not A Thing From You
your Life Is Trite And Jaded
boring And Confiscated
if That's Your Best, Your Best Won't Do

oh.....................
oh.....................
we're Right/yeah
we're Free/yeah
we'll Fight/yeah
you'll See/yeah

oh We're Not Gonna Take It
no, We Ain't Gonna Take It
oh We're Not Gonna Take It Anymore

oh We're Not Gonna Take It
no, We Ain't Gonna Take It
oh We're Not Gonna Take It Anymore
no Way!

oh.....................
oh.....................
we're Right/yeah
we're Free/yeah
we'll Fight/yeah
you'll See/yeah

we're Not Gonna Take It
no, We Ain't Gonna Take It
we're Not Gonna Take It Anymore

we're Not Gonna Take It, No!
no, We Ain't Gonna Take It
we're Not Gonna Take It Anymore

just You Try And Make Us
we're Not Gonna Take It
come On
no, We Ain't Gonna Take It
you're All Worthless And Weak
we're Not Gonna Take It Anymore
now Drop And Give Me Twenty
we're Not Gonna Take It
oh Crinch Pin
no, We Ain't Gonna Take It
oh You And Your Uniform
we're Not Gonna Take It Anymore
Another song from the 80's that I loved.

'You're the Voice' by John Farnham

We have the chance to turn the pages over
We can write what we want to write
We gotta make ends meet before we get much older

We're all someone's daughter
We're all someone's son
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?

You're the voice try and understand it
Make the noise and make it clear, woah
We're not going to sit in silence
We're not going to live with fear, oh, woah

This time we know we all can stand together
With the power to be powerful
Believing we can make it better

Oooh, we're all someone's daughter
We're all someone's son
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?

You're the voice try and understand it
Make the noise and make it clear, woah
We're not going to sit in silence
We're not going to live with fear, oh, woah

(Chorus is then repeated several times)

Helen
I don't know if this would fit completely...but Deep Blue Sea always inspired me.

I don't if it would work

I also like Beauty in your Eyes

They lyrics are from Deep Forest
...couldn't we write an original song?
Actually, I like to parody songs. We should parody theirs!!

I haven't listened to it yet though.

Plus, we should go thumbs down all the comments and post our own...
OK I posted a few comments. I get scared standing up to the majority by myself (yeah, that's a really chicken trait; I'm trying to overcome it...) , and I didn't say anything too grand, so PLEASE someone else come... -__-''

I find this very intresting that you somehow think you know my intensions. I find it incredibly intresting that you have never contacted me and asked the motive, the heart or the drive behind the song. I find it intresting that you think you have the right to unvalidate the feelings of so many parents who struggle to help their children communicate with them. A curbie song you say. As I sit here and write this post I have just learned of this term. The song itself has already prompted my parents to get their children screened. It has brought direct awareness to little lives who can't yet speak for themselves. I would challange anyone to proove my intensions as curbie as I co-wrote the song. Cathy's daughter has profound autism as my son battles autism. I would moreso challange you to be a real help and spread the song and the word instead of this intresting post.  You can obviously talk, you are obviously verbal. You see when my son has a seizure he can't even tell me that he is hurting. When he is terrified at what has just happened he can't even ask his daddy to help him or say I am scared. How dare you! As a matter of fact, shame on you!

Correction typo - the line should have read - "many parents" instead of my.

Am I missing something here, mckelvie2008?

As I read this thread, it seemed to me that it was the first song listed, "I'm in Here" - Anthem for Autism, that was accused by the OP of being 'curebie'.

Then it was suggested that we make a list of positive anthems for autism.

I thought Gareth was posting "I walk to my own song"  by Stratovarius as being in that positive list!

He's the "I'm in here" author, not the "I walk to my own song" author.

I just had a look at the link - the song itself is okay, but I think what's being referred to is the fact that royalties are going to "help fight autism", rather than "helping autistic people".

The difference is important - for example, I agree that more funding should be put into researching speech therapy, or to find the causes of seizures in autistic people. At the moment, almost no research is being done in this area, as research funding is being funneled into removing "autism", rather than removing the issues associated with autism.

To put it another way, breast cancer is an issue for many women, but no-one would advocate a cure for "femaleness" to solve this.

Autism is an inseparable part of a persons personality - it effects and influences pretty much every part of our lives. This is what the autistic rights movement is all about.

To answer your question, if royalties are going to "cure" research, then your intentions are curbie, by definition. If the royalties were to go to a more positive cause, then I would have no problem with the song.

Exactly. Curebieism isn't defined by intentions. In fact, the majority of curebies are not malicious, only misguided. Most really do want what they think is best for autistics, but they are at odds with what the majority of autistics think is best.

Some people do make things even harder than they have to be though and if the kids weren't forced to interact in ways that were inimical to them or be expected to be normal they mightn't "struggle" so much.
I've just been googling...Mckelvie appears to be the author of "I'm in here" (though I didn't stop long enough to listen to it, so have no comment on whether it's curebie).

Stratovarius are a Finnish metal group - not to my tastes, but my dormant punk sensibilities were stirred...I'm glad someone is doing that, even if I don't want to listen to it.

I also noticed for the first time (despite googling song lyrics frequently) that most lyric sites don't credit the songwriter at all - shocking, really.
D'oh, did it again - responded to the last post on page 1 without realising there was a page 2.

I enjoyed your rant, aliengirl - I used to work with adults with severe and complex learning difficulties, including autistic spectrum disorders with complicating factors.  I was much praised by my employers, who approached the work from what seemed the 'right' perspective.  Then they moved and I ended up working for an employer who encapsulated the issues you raised - I'm currently taking them to an employment tribunal (thread in work forum).

You should be careful here though - there are some very determined parents on AFF who don't care to have their approach questioned, despite the stated nature of AFF...
