Aspies For Freedom

Full Version: Autism Speaks wants to showcase *our* writing?  ;-)

I agree with BobB.  And not only should we flood them with submissions representing our own view, we should create a webpage to display every single one of the submissions and whether or not it got published; and if it did get published, but rewritten, we should also include a link to AutSp's rewritten version, so everyone can see how they are misrepresenting autistics.
I got The Autism Acceptance Projects magazine from the Autistic Self Advocacy Network's mailing list.

Saw that they are willing to take submissions every month.
I don't think anyone here advocated bashing AutSp.  BobB's poem (which is excellent, by the way) bashes the JRC, and the website idea I had would serve as a back-up sort of thing- if AutSp is honorable with the submissions, then all is fine and dandy, but if not, we've got this website showing just how crooked the view they're representing is.  But no one is advocating sending them submissions just to rub their faces in how much we hate them or something.
If they want to truly and honestly represent us and our voices, they'll publish our submissions, and I'll respect them for that.
If not, then I want to show people that they're dishonest.
And the best way to go about doing either of those is with truthful and heartfelt submissions advocating neurodiversity and acceptance.  A LOT of truthful and heartfelt submissions advocating neurodiversity and acceptance.  The more, the better.

Excellent poem, Bob!

Where do we show our work? I have a short story that might be appropriate, but is probably too long for this thread.

"Please send your short stories, poetry, and song lyrics to 'editors' @ their site for consideration. "
Which means, editors @ autismspeaks dot com.

Maybe we should start a thread for people to post the submissions they've sent in?  It can be moved to a separate site later for ease of viewing.

(also, if anyone is nervous or unsure about how to write a cover letter to go with their submission, or how to format it, etc, feel free to PM me- I have a lot of experience submitting to literary magazines, and I don't mind helping)

I think Aspie44.8 has a really good short story.

I assume they'll be published on the AutSp site, but will probably also go out in their newsletter.  Either way, if you get published, chances are they will send you  link to where you can read your work, or a free copy if it's a members-only publication.
TheZach - what?
Back to the subject of the thread - I do not believe that autism speaks will publish anything that is actually positive about autism unless they can pervert it. Should anyone submit something read the small print carefully - if you don't grant permission for them to modify it and they do then they can be sued.
Might be good to not take any chances.
I like Luai's idea of making a site for all of the poems we have submitted by the way.
Deviant Art?
Luai is/or has been obsessed with Deviant Art, so she knows what it is.

I was asking if the submissions that we send should be posted on a Deviant Art group.
That would be really cool.
Might have to hurry up.
Biomed Kid wasn't accepted the first time I submitted it to AspieAuty because it wasn't directly connected to neurodiversity, is that changed now?

I also wonder how I submit it to Autism Speaks.
