I got a mailing from Autism Speaks (gotta keep an eye on the 'enemy', you know) where they noted that April 2nd is "World Autism Awareness Day".

From the mailing: "Autism Speaks has announced a series of international events to mark the inaugural celebration of World Autism Awareness Day, an unprecedented global effort to heighten awareness about autism. The April 2 events will take place on three continents and in venues ranging from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange to local bookstores and the worldwide web, and are expected to generate significant national and international media coverage."

What can *we* do to promote the *truth*, and not let AS hog all the publicity?

Can a mod please break the link in the original post?  We don't want to be promoting AutSp's event!

Luai_lashire,
Neither do I; the reason I posted the link was so people would know what was going on.  Smile

I suggest organizing a Neurodiversity-themed internet protest and blogathon for April 2nd, as well as organizing irl protests/events.  I also suggest that individuals write to their local newspaper explaining that April 2nd is Autism Awareness Day, and why we oppose AutSp's version of the event, and what we want people to know about autism and Neurodiversity.

And that's *exactly* what I want to see; *our* point of view presented to the public!  Smile

Is this an AutSp event? I was under the impression that it was UN.

Still, disseminating information about neurodiversity is definatley a good idea. I suggest writing a letter to you newspaper or something explaining about how AutSp doesn't represent us, etc.

nathanww,
It was designated by the UN, but they're letting AutSp call the shots.

  Bad move...

"On December 18, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly, by unanimous consent, passed the resolution of the Third Committee designating April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day in perpetuity starting in 2008."

Thanks for the comments, Tigger.  Smile This was a first attempt and I'll have another look at it tomorrow and try rewording it.  The text doesn't look so dense and intimidating when it's a Word document, but it's still a bit long, I feel.

I think it would be good if I could use a link to AFF which would take people straight to more detailed information about ASD and neurodiversity - then I wouldn't have to put so much info in the email.  Something else for us all to work on! Smile

I was also thinking it might be better to have this in a member's only thread...
Blame Qatar - they started it.... going to the UN and all!  Now look what's happened! Big Grin
