The article also mentions predictions about nanobots being implanted into brains.
What are your thoughts?
I welcome the idea. There's already an experimental procedure to induce features of savantism in a normal person, which is done with some electromagnetic device. Interesting to note that the side effects of savantism tend to appear with it--inability to tell left from right--but these are paltry as compared to what you gain.
Imagine if nanobots in the brain could make someone like me--a learning-disabled lemon--have the ability to turn on savantism at a moment's notice. All those other hypergifted NTs/Aspies wouldn't be so special anymore, eh?
Could people with nanobats donate blood? Or would Christians object (would it be marks of the beast?)
Yeah lets *** with our bodies
Whoopee.
Sometimes good old aspie literalism plays some strange tricks - my first thought on reading this was "What else would we *** with?".
Then I realised what he meant... *grins*
Zakkie-I MUST remember when reading your posts-not to drink coffee ( or ovaltine) because I inevitably end up laughing outloud and spewing hot liquid all over the place
*grins back*
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek did describe bacteria as little animals, or "little beasties", so I guess nanobots would be little Beast-ies right?
Nanobots could be infectious disease if they are capable of self-replicating. Build your own infectious disease, an STD maybe? Go high tech?
I like Modern Marvels on the History Channel, or the book Doomsday by _______ (somebody)
1. Bioengineered bacteria that kills narcotics has flaw, kills all chlorophyll-based plant life, gets loose, bye bye food chain
2. New wonder wheat, but 2 billion people are allergic to it, but it is too late to go back to the old strain.
Leukaemia.
I don't think self replicating artificial blood corouscles would happen, more like, a transfusion, they wouldn't die of course so wouldn't need replacing as often as natural ones turn over.
I want some at any rate.
Nanobots wouldn't nescessarily have to have any circuitry, those respirocytes for instance, I could see it being done by say, ion-exchange or semi permeable membranes.
I'm more in favour of doing things like that chemically, without need for electronics where its feasible for those reasons.
That said, a HERF or EMP discharge would heat them up, which isn't something I would fancy.
A
virtual infant, I might just be able to handle! He would grow up knowing all about food and TV...

AWK! O_O Then there will have to BE virtual food and TV! My virtual infant's life depends upon it!!!
AWK! O_O Then there will have to BE virtual food and TV! My virtual infant's life depends upon it!!!
He/she will only need to eat CPU cycles
How can any of these devices help the learning challenged among us, like me? Is there anything out there that will "increase" intelligence, in some idiosyncratic way?
so Gareth, what is your view on Prosthetics, AI's and implants? (going with the Ghost in the Shell model)
I'm already a partial cyborg on some days, love my wearable computer and CES (Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulator). Personally i'd happily upgrade every part of my body except the brain (which i'll only interface with, never replace - since replacing it would just end up killing me) so long as my external appearance still looks vaguely human. Get me a qualified surgeon who'd be willing to bypass the bioethics committee and i'd start implanting my retinal implant and onboard computer with inner ear transducer for audio output today.
Why would you want to look 'vaguely human'. It is my experience that if you don't look fully, completely human you get MORE prejudice than if you look like something else altogether.
Personally, I would prefer the body, silent flight capability and night-vision of a cyber-owl!
Although anything which wasn't painful would be better than what I have now. It is a standard exchange in my house: Hubby, "Can I get you anything?" Me, "A new body, thanks!"
Gareth, soon as I can afford it, I am definately investing in some piracetam, phosphatidylcholine, perhaps some centrophenoxine (sp) as well.
The ampakines now, they look REALLY interesting, but have you seen the prices quoted? I read 4k per kilo in one quote! I forget which compound though, its a project though I plan to do myself in the future, as soon as I have some glassware I'm getting sent when someone is done with it, I have been looking through a few synthetic patents for the ampakines actually, doing my own synth to cut down the price down to something comfortable, and of course, for the fun of it

I don't have the money or the insurance for any of this. And the reason I don't is because of my learning disabilities.. Simple equation:
more ability=higher probability of financial security
Hey hey, whats wrong with looking pale and ghostly? I would go apewaste if I got a tan I couldn't get rid of
Gareth, about the ampakines, do you not see much promise in them? why may I ask, if thats the case? some of them seem to have a few potentially side effects, such as enhancing long term, but impairing short term memory formation, but others seem to have a much more favourable safety profile.
Apart from the cost though, the main reason I would rather do it myself, is I actually enjoy doing that sorta stuff, some people dig socialising and all that, I'm more at home arse-deep in glassware, once I get my new kit, I have to get my hand back in somewhere, a nice project that I cannot get busted for is just what I need to sharpen up a bit.
Your picture isn't coming up--and the link is either not working or my internet is screwed up.
