Hi I am another newbie from Australia.
I am a married mum to a gorgeous 2yo daughter, and an adorable 5yo son diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome. He was diagnosed about a year ago so it is still quite new to us, but I have done a fair bit of reading and research. Once we learned more about his sensory issues we have been able to manage things so much better. We also get a lot of support from AutismSA they have been fantastic.

M has recently started school and much to our relief he just LOVES it. He complains on the weekends because he is sooooooo bored he just can't stand being home with boring mum! Rather than be offended I am greatly relieved as he had quite a bit of trouble integrating into Kindergarten and the changing routines there. So far so good but it is still first term and the school are being very accomodating allowing him lots of quiet time-out space when he is overstimulated or upset. They are even talking about getting him some earmuffs so that he can participate in the assemblies without getting distressed.  It seems he has lots of friends and is doing well. I am just so happy as I was expecting hours of screaming at home after school (that's how it was at kindy at the start of semesters). He has even been chosen as a team leader for their clean-up day event. Could I be any prouder?? Big Grin

Good to start off on a positive note. I am pleased to find a forum like this as I don't know many ppl with AS there is no local support group near us that is relevant to us. I do get tired of ppl talking about M as though he has a disability. I understand that it is classed that way but I guess I don't really see it that way. He is our first child and we have never known anything different. As our 2yo daughter grows we notice some differences but they are also alike in many ways, especially as she copies his behaviours eg the headbanging/chanting/humming, lol. They present a united front!

Anyway... I talk too much.
I hope I can learn from hanging around the boards here. I find the labels and shorthand a bit confusing sometimes but I expect I'll get the hang of it. Thanks for sharing here and I hope to get to know you!!

G'evening! And welcome to AFF!
Hi and welcome! Smile

I'm in Scotland and have a six year old son who's waiting for diagnosis.  He sounds like your son, especially the bit about being bored at weekends.  His favourite stims are headbanging, flapping and spinning - two of them at it must be fun! Smile

If you don't understand any of the labels and shorthand - just ask.

And no need to apologise for talking too much! Smile  I don't, well, not always....

Never mind a Neurodiversity League - how about a West of Scotland Insomniacs Club!

Welcome aboard! There's quite a few Aussies on the site (myself included), so the more the merrier...

There's quite a few acronyms that get used a lot here - here's a thread that explains some of them: http://www.aspiesforfreedom.com/showthre...?tid=10224

For anything that isn't covered there, as Marcia says, most people will be pretty happy to tell you what something in a thread means.

*grins* Hope you enjoy your stay!
Welcome!!!  I'm an Aussie and new too Smile  My son is 10 and only just being assessed.  This is a fantastic site and very helpful.
Thank you very much for the warm welcome ocampo, Marcia, EvilZakkie, and Rastus. Smile

WELCOME!

I agree that the folks at AutismSA are great! Sadly, our three years in Adelaide were up last month and we are now in Canberra. Rolleyes Typical, it would have been great to have another AFF member in SA! You can be my replacement... Big Grin
