Here's an update on the words in Ocampo's signature which seem relevant to this thread....
First they came for the Muslims, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Muslim.
Then they came for immigrants, detaining them indefinitely, solely on the certification of the internee general, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't an immigrant.
And they came to enter homes and offices, for unannounced sneak, seek and peek searches, and I didn't speak up, because I had nothing to hide.
Then they came to arrest citizens, and hold them indefinitely, without any charges, and without access to lawyers, and I didn't speak up, because I would never be arrested.
Then they came for immigrants and students from selected countries, lured them under the requirement of special registration, as a ruse to seize them, and detain them, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't required to register.
Then they came for anyone who objected to the government policies,
because it only aided the terrorists and gave ammunition to the enemies,
and I didn't speak up, because I didn't speak up.
And then they came.... for me,
and by that time, no one was left,
to speak up.
There ILLEGAL aliens, they should be carted back to where they came from. They dont have any rights other then to not be beaten, not make money, and be deported.
My family immigrated illegally. They came over in 1635, running from religious prosecution. I guess I'd better start packing!!
People are having this currenty very popular knee-jerk reaction (TheZack, you are so very trendy!!), but they are not really looking at the deeper issues.
1. the extent to which the US has become relient on food, etc produced cheaply. it would skyrocket the price of food to pay red-blooded americans (what color blood do others have??) minimum wage - if we could even get them to do this work.
2. the extent to which american supresses the economy south of our boarders.
the world it too small for us to get away this ^%&# anymore!!
this is probably some conspiracy therory to scare the aliens into giving even more sweat for less.
I live in AZ where this is the news of daily life.
We build a nice wall there
I don't believe that building a wall will prevent undocumented immigrants from entering the US. Mexico is not the only source of undocumented immigrants, there are undocumented immigrants from other nations as well, some came here legally due to a tourist or student visa and never left or came here through human trafficiking (modern day slavery). If anyone remembers about the Berlin Wall or studied about it in history class, the wall did not prevent all East Germans from escaping, some actually succeeded and over 400 East Germans were killed trying to escape.
did anyone hear bill gates on npr talk about how he can not hire from the class of '08? i guess all the green cards are already gone, so the grad students who are top of their classes are packing up their brains & talent and going home or to a more welcoming country
What blows me away about rednecks is how most of them vote for the Republicans, a party which obviously helps out the rich at the expense of the poor. Republicnas couldn't give a *** about the working poor, so why do the working poor vote for them?
the republican party has been hyjacked by hate mongers who want to throw us back to the good 'ole days when
there were only white men and the people who did their bidding, and the freeks were put in institutions where they belonged and the geeks were always available for some fun bullying
those rednecked white men have visions of power based on gender and skin color if only the [im]moral majority would triumph
unfortunately because of our social welfare system ( where we send checks to able-bodied people who sit on their
why not deport them and hang on to the hard working aleins????
so the grad students who are top of their classes are packing up their brains & talent and going home ...
the top grads are predominantly aleins so home is not in the usa
1. Chimera, the first John Marsh emigrated in 1635, too. My paternal ancestry is loaded with hundreds of years of Marsh roots in America, first a few generations of aldermen, then two generations of farmers, some clergy, grandfather who "was working on the railroad all the livelong day", and dad the writer-editor for such publications as Changing Times (Kiplinger) and the Social Security Bulletin (United States civilian Federal Government). Dad's mother was German (Kickafer).
one branch, Coe, left england for holland, then to new england in 1635 and pretty much settled in Durham NH as ministers and college professors. The other branch, Curry, probably traveled with your folks to S carolina where they were farmers & abolutionists. in 1836 they moved in a conestoga wagon to bloomington IN. they kept that wagon on the family farm until they sold it when i was about 6 (1959), family members each have photos of it. I keep my mother's photo of it by the front door to remember that it is a family tradition to help those with less power. the two families intertwined when my curry grandfather taught chemistry at UNH and met my grand mother. i don't have any recent imigrint ancesters, but my 14 year olds are decended from abenaki who have been dated to about 15,000 years in this land.
4. I need to hear from Bill Gates why no one from the class of 2008 is available to work.
Wow, do you two talk frequently?
i didn't say no one was available, i meant the top of the class is not available.
"The thing that limits us is hiring the world's best engineers," he says, noting that 60 percent of the students at the top U.S. computer-science departments are foreign-born.
"Traditionally, most of them stay in the country and jobs are created around them. Now that we've hit these quotas, they have to go somewhere else," Gates says.

America has always relied on a slave labor force to drive it's economy and we always will if we continue with our current economic model. America has always had slaves, whether they be bonded by contract, by steel, by poverty, or by fear.
Arctoris is exactly correct. I wish more people got this concept.
in the Upper Peninsula. not very far from Mom's birthplace in Ontonagon), well known for its significant Finnish American population.
and pasties...I used to love them back in my carnivourous days. Sleeping bear dune was also a favorite stopping place.
I am so over people sticking the boot into illegal aliens, refugees and welfare recipients. If you want point the finger at someone point it the 5% of the world's population that control 95% of the world's wealth, while the other 95% of us squabble over the remaining 5%.
And why do people always stick the boot into illegal aliens? What about the unscrupulous employers who hire them rather than paying a fair wage to US citizens?
Creasy, I am gonna write your name in on the presidential ballot - you got my vote!!
Onya Creasy! When are racists going to realise that there are vested interests in keeping a pool of low paid aliens working in countries such as the USA? Instead of blaming the people who are just like any of us in trying to do the best for themselves and their families, look at the greedy ones exploiting them.
You can be vice pres - only b/c your post was second in line and I committed to Creasy
I want a team the will leave the poor hardworking aliens alone and put the boot to the credit card usery practices. they are robbing the middle class and grinding them into the dirt. so far I haven't heard either the reps or dems address this issue
I'm in the UK and don't understand what the illegals situation is in the US. Could some of you please tell me what the problems are...?
I'm in the UK and don't understand what the illegals situation is in the US. Could some of you please tell me what the problems are...?
it is the same as the problems you have in your country with the romos, indians and pakistanis
Sorry, this doesn't really answer my question. Most of the US posters seem to be refering to Hispanics and Mexicans - I'm assuming they are economic migrants who are able to find low-paid work in the US - is that correct?
For the record most of the Indians and Pakistanis in Scotland, which is where I stay, came here a generation or so ago, they are here legally and integrated into our society. I assume the other group you refer to are the Roma who have started coming here in reasonably large numbers and there are some difficulties and tensions associated with their presence. However, these problems are a result of housing policy and differing attitudes towards work and education among other things. I don't hear of people being condemned here because they are "illegals", which seems to be the case in the US - from what I'm hearing here.
Incidentally, there was a case in Scotland a year or so ago, when a young man was seized in a dawn raid because he didn't have permission to be here. He had come here as a child with his family and they settled on a Scottish island. When he was taken to be deported - to Thailand, I think - the community rallied round and protested against his detention and proposed deportation. He was allowed to stay and welcomed back to the community which had taken him in as one of their own.
Dawn raids are extremely unpopular in Scotland and local communities have been known to gather together and prevent people being taken - for detention and deportation. In addition, the churches here are opposed to people being treated in such inhumane ways, not only detention and deportation, but also the policy of destitution and refusal to let asylum seekers work.
This doesn't seem to be the case in the US and I just wondered what was at the root of the tensions - surely it's more than just these people's legal status...
Being gay is not evil, I don't care what your religion says on the subject. You say homosexuality is a "sin" - that is essentially hate speech, but i'm not going to waste my time arguing about it.
the whole of St. Paul `s christianity is based on a white lie and more importantly the "vision" of a madman who did not know Jesus.(after all Paul or Saul as I prefer to call him,was a jew who was a roman citizen, who hated jews. thats why he was a bounty -hunter and tax collector) If you accept Jesus than you must know and understand the things he said ( read the banned books from the Nag Hammadi library) most importantly to love all and in order to gain Nirvana or heaven , to do service to all mankind.Jesus neither put down the gay person or the harlot , or the samaritan or the gentile and neither should we.
Before Paul was called by God he was a Jew who persecuted Christians and he was a tent-maker!
Sooner or later anybody hating anyone is possible. Hatred bounces off the walls every which way. The Jews were the political establishment in Judea before the Roman siege of Jerusalem and the Christians were enemies of the state. Believe it.
Thank you, GuessWho!
Well put!
