A couple of years ago Virginia didn't like the unmarried couples, notably the gays.  They passed a political amendment I hated, Amendment 1, which withdrew certain legal rights for unmarried partnerships.

Never mind what my religion is.  I do not believe Virginia or America is a theocracy.  If it were I'd run, because it might be someone else's theocracy tomorrow, not mine, and I might be cat food for the lions.

I had a co-worker quit: she and her partner left for Seattle, which seems to understand the separation of church and state.

And now they are going after the illegal aliens.

Ocampo..... I am thinking of you and Martin Niemoller....

--------------------------------------------

They went for the unmarried partners,
and I and 40% of Virginia voted against Amendment 1

They went for the illegal aliens,
and even though in principle I think immigration laws need enforcing,
why did we not enforce them for so long, and why are we creating an atmosphere of fear suddenty NOW?

people are tired of the illegals thumbing their noses at us gringos..I say it is about time

There ILLEGAL aliens, they should be carted back to where they came from.  They dont have any rights other then to not be beaten, not make money, and be deported.

My family immigrated illegally.  They came over in 1635, running from religious prosecution.  I guess I'd better start packing!!

People are having this currenty very popular knee-jerk reaction (TheZack, you are so very trendy!!), but they are not really looking at the deeper issues.

1. the extent to which the US has become relient on food, etc produced cheaply.  it would skyrocket the price of food to pay red-blooded americans (what color blood do others have??) minimum wage - if we could even get them to do this work.
2. the extent to which american supresses the economy south of our boarders.

the world it too small for us to get away this ^%&# anymore!!

this is probably some conspiracy therory to scare the aliens into giving even more sweat for less.

I live in AZ where this is the news of daily life.

unfortunately because of our  social welfare system ( where we send checks to able-bodied people who sit on their butts and contribute nothing) our cheap labor is not willing to work.welfare recipients shoud be required to work at menial or minimum wage jobs for at least 30 hours a week . then the government could make up the difference so they would recieve a living wage. then we would not need the illegals...they could go home and labor for their own countries and make things better in their own land.  my ancesters came here aa indentured servants and worked for their freedom...so I know of this also , chimera , our country has always welcomed legal  immigrants with open arms and should continue to do so. Until I am allowed to break the law and get away with it (these people do this in plain sight) I will never support the illegals...I wish them no harm ,just wish they would go home.

Police officials pledged to enforce the law fairly and to not stop and question individuals based on their racial or ethnic appearance, but many Hispanic residents said they feared they would be stopped without reason and deported for such violations as driving without a valid license or having a broken taillight.

"Already the rumors are starting," said Rene Cabrera, a legal resident from El Salvador who works at a market in Manassas. "My friend saw four patrol cars outside a shopping mall and ?thought it was a raid?. Instead of going to the store, he stayed in his car and drove away. I really worry this can create chaos."

Immigrant advocate groups, speaking at a community meeting Sunday in Woodbridge and on local Spanish-language radio stations, have been advising immigrants without legal papers to keep a low profile and obey all traffic rules. If stopped by police, the groups said, they should be polite and show some identification but otherwise remain silent until they can see a lawyer.

"We are telling people to drive perfectly, not to spit or jaywalk, and not to carry anything in a brown paper bag," said Nancy Lyhall, a volunteer with the local pro-immigrant group Mexicans Without Borders.

If anyone wants to argue about the failed immigration policy, then, fine. But the first post implied that even having a policy was racist, and hateful. While the second stereotyped anyone in the state of Virginia as racist. I don't agree.

thanks for your post..I think this shows an example of folks helping others break the law.I dont care if hispanics get nervous when they see the law approaching...they should.
another thing poeple should think about...yes illegals provide cheap labor, but just for the contractors. In much the same way corporate america screws us by making a pair of basketball shoes for $5 in thailand and selling to us for $240. we  the consumer of the shoes or the houses that are built or even the crops that are picked never see any savings.
yes mark me down as discriminatory and proud to be american ..we can still fix the wrongs in this country...bush jr. will be unemployed soon..............Sky

Plenty of Hispanics are born and bred in America but retain a kinship with their original culture. I fail to see why a fellow American who happens to also be Hispanic 'should' feel nervous. At the end of the day you don't see which Latino/Hispanic individual carries a US passport or not at first before you start discriminating against them. Which makes your comments seem not just discriminatory but downright idiotic.

Incidentally, neither side of my family originate from the UK - my mother's side are Irish and my father's side either Spanish or Italian. I don't look Scottish and I've had racial abuse thrown at me because of my colouring and because I have a heavy Irish lilt. I'm very much aware of my multicultural origins and I'm very proud of it. It doesn't stop me being British.

You can spot some illegals but its not that easy. However congratulations on admitting to your casual racism. I agree with Mahler. Maybe you should take the advice of your signature. Although I'd substitute 'words' for 'bollocks'.

I am so over people sticking the boot into illegal aliens, refugees and welfare recipients. If you want point the finger at someone point it the 5% of the world's population that control 95% of the world's wealth, while the other 95% of us squabble over the remaining 5%.

And why do people always stick the boot into illegal aliens? What about the unscrupulous employers who hire them rather than paying a fair wage to US citizens?

Onya Creasy! When are racists going to realise that there are vested interests in keeping a pool of low paid aliens working in countries such as the USA? Instead of blaming the people who are just like any of us in trying to do the best for themselves and their families, look at the greedy ones exploiting them.

aye, seconded.

Oh, like the 'indians and pakistanis' who are here legally?

So I gather that pejorative labelling as exhibited in {IRONY} is how you see it, then?

are you talking to me or skyblue?

Whoa!!!Stop people. There are people who dislike immigrants ALL OVER THE US, not just S. VA. VA is really two states you know- N. and S.

Rein in the Southern stereotypes for a minute. I know for a friggin FACT Hope does better here than she would in a lot of places in the US BECAUSE the people are church-going and at least THINK about the golden rule a little. I wouldn't live in Philly for love or money although her sorta blank face and reluctance to smile would make it easier for her to fit in in some ways.

As a result of the above both the kids and teachers here and in Atlanta where we used to live were usually VERY tolerant of Hope and her eccentricities. Even our pricey expert advised us to put her in a private church school also for the above reasons. The people are just kinder when they are not being religious hypercrites.

Now, it isn't across the board, but I have found that both the South in general and small towns in particular (where everyone knows everybody else for the most part) are helpful to Aspies. There is less bullying if everyone has more or less gotten at least subtly the "memo" that Hope is a bit different.

Re gays, I would venture that fully 60% of Americans, whereever they live, are not very knowledgable about whether it is a choice or not (it's not of course). Meher Baba referred once to a gay man's friend as his "pal", so if homosexuality is ok with the Avatar it is OK with me (always has been actually).

Do your part in debunking the myth that it is wrong because the bible says so. I do!

Re rednecks, there are more rednecks in places like PA, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and the west than there are in the entire friggin south by a wide margin. At least our rednecks have manners here (though some don't and are mean as hell) Big Grin

Re race- I've said this a million times, but what the hell I'll say it again, the south is loaded with sisters and brothers and we love each other down here. We sure as HELL have tried longer and harder to solve the race problem than ANY other single region in the US. I have tons of black friends and go to their churches on occasion- can a Seattle-ite or Californian or someone from Arizona make that claim? Do they even know anything about black culture in MN or anywhere else outside the south for that matter? We love each other and we mix socially here, unlike the rest of the US. Religion will come next- many churches are integrated now, all over the US actually but particularly (I've noticed- drumroll- in the South).

At this point Barack's race should no longer be an issue. The fact that is still is is testiment to how race-obsessed and biased the US in general is. Jesus, me and Bill Clinton are probably more black than he is and I am not kidding!
