1. Chimera, the first John Marsh emigrated in 1635, too. My paternal ancestry is loaded with hundreds of years of Marsh roots in America, first a few generations of aldermen, then two generations of farmers, some clergy, grandfather who "was working on the railroad all the livelong day", and dad the writer-editor for such publications as Changing Times (Kiplinger) and the Social Security Bulletin (United States civilian Federal Government). Dad's mother was German (Kickafer).
2. My most recent immigrant ancestor is my maternal grandfather, a Finnish immigrant, but too young to remember, about age 2, about 1902 when he arrived. (That would have made him and my great-grand-parents Finnish subjects of Russian Czar Nicholas II). I don't know much about my maternal grandmother but I believe her to be mainly of Swedish and maybe German ancestry.
3. No you're right, the Republicans care about the rich, and say they care about everyone. I know the Democrats say they care about the lower and middle classes, and on occasion, they really come through and show it. Cases in point: Bill Clinton expanded the Earned Income Credit to taxpayers without dependents; also created the Ford Direct Student Loan system that has cancellation provisions if income-contingent repayment options somehow fail after 25 years.
4. Most welfare and disability is theoretically wasteful- and dehumanizing. We could find something for most conscious people with a pulse to do. That scene in The Dirty Dozen, "If you don't have something to do, we'll find something for you to do."[/i] Getting someone else to consent to hire them is another matter. In the USSR consent to hire was a non-issue. "If a man shall not work, neither shall he eat...." that man learns pretty fast. From graduate school: I believe this about Marx, work being made for man, or vice versia.
4. I need to hear from Bill Gates why no one from the class of 2008 is available to work.
The first Marshes seem to be Connecticut based, and vicinity (Rhode Island?). By the Civil War they seemed firmly entrenched in Wisconsin and vicinity. Union soldiers of course. One soldier's letter home griping about Johnny Reb and how they are winning the war for freedom.
Mom's people headed to a comparable latitude- Michigan. Mom's brother and sister went to Gogebic County Michigan (Ironwood, Iron Mountain, very close to the Canadian border in the Upper Peninsula. not very far from Mom's birthplace in Ontonagon), well known for its significant Finnish American population.
Dad had a wild idea to work in Washington (life insurance) DC area after leaving the Army, so he married Mom there in 1957, and ultimately joined the Federal Government like so many of us here. The Master's degree in mass communications at American University didn't quite work out (almost, but for lack of the thesis, oh, too bad!)
Seriously, you should read Deer Hunting With Jesus. It's about rednecks in W It was written by a guy who is a democrate journalist but he was born and raised in Virginia and the book is about his observations on his town and its people when he goes back as a middle aged man. It's very well written, with equal doeses of serious insight and humour.

Dost thou mind if I disagree with you, and Guess Who. I have nothing against Guess Who and I realise that the two of you contribute here frequently.
I myself am part Amerindian when the truth be told and yet I don't agree in open borders, come one come all, nonsense. I'm sure that it's an unsettling thing to see anyone getting rounded up, but is that what you actually have seen, because I have lived in both Canada and the "South" or Southeast all of my life and have never seen so much as a single person questioned.
In fact I once saw a "gentleman" reading "Nuestro Hombre Noriega. Milliones en Drugos y Armamentos" right at the immigration facility in N. Miami.
The world is going to hell today anyhow, so roll with it.

Police officials pledged to enforce the law fairly and to
not stop and question individuals based on their racial or ethnic appearance, but many Hispanic residents said they feared they would be stopped without reason and deported for such violations as
driving without a valid
license or having a broken taillight.
"Already the rumors are starting," said Rene Cabrera, a legal resident from El Salvador who works at a market in Manassas. "My friend saw four patrol cars outside a shopping mall and
?thought it was a raid?. Instead of going to the store, he stayed in his car and drove away. I really worry this can create chaos."
Immigrant advocate groups, speaking at a community meeting Sunday in Woodbridge and on local
Spanish-language radio stations, have been advising immigrants without legal papers to keep a low profile and obey all traffic rules. If stopped by police, the groups said, they should be polite and show some identification but otherwise remain silent until they can see a lawyer.
"We are telling people to drive perfectly, not to spit or jaywalk, and not to carry anything in a brown paper bag," said Nancy Lyhall, a volunteer with the local pro-immigrant group
Mexicans Without Borders.
If anyone wants to argue about the failed immigration policy, then, fine. But the first post implied that even having a policy was racist, and hateful. While the second stereotyped anyone in the state of Virginia as racist. I don't agree.
I set up a thread for credit card company abusive practices.
So I gather that pejorative labelling as exhibited in {IRONY} is how you see it, then?
One major complication is women who have children born here (who are citizens because they were born within the territory of our country, no questions asked) and then it sort of becomes a matter of "I dare you to deport me and orphan this kid" or "how can you deport a citizen baby?"
It is impractical to be concerned with what people do when only God is watching.
On the other hand, it is very practical to love your neighbor even if they have a strange habit or believe differently, in fact, following Jesus' example is important to be saved. Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer and has no eternal life (look that up).
Well.... if a guy stands 9'8" and weighs 500 pounds, will you tell him off?
God makes the point again and again in Job-- who are you Job, a human, a little human, shut up, I'm God, if I want to ruin your life, I will, and maybe I will make you like it (maybe not the last part)
So basically God would say, Chris, you think I'm hard on gay people (well, I do.....)
Gareth, you think I'm hard on gay people?
If I want to say what they do is a sin, you wanna make something of it, human?
---------------------------------------------------------
On the other hand, if you believe God created Asperger and autism (and Down's syndrome and MR and DD and what not), then the brush strokes in our favour too
"Hey, human! You think having an autistic baby is awful! You'd abort an autistic baby! I think autism is cool! That's why I made autism!"
Evidently, autism is here with God's permission, and it seems God loves diversity.
----------------------------------------
I might as well stop fantasizing about being God and cutting gay people a break. It ain't gonna happen, and if I did, I wouldn't have the patience to let evil keep going unchecked, so many people who could be saved in Jesus' name would never have the chance, because I'd be eager to put a stop to all this Satan hegemony and chaos.
Sooner or later anybody hating anyone is possible. Hatred bounces off the walls every which way. The Jews were the political establishment in Judea before the Roman siege of Jerusalem and the Christians were enemies of the state. Believe it.
Now, the Jews didn't have a politic or a state for almost 2000 years after that, so they were the persecute[d].
Anyone with a state can persecute in the name of the state using the military or the police. The Rodney King beating was just a mini example of state-sponsored persecution [Los Angeles] by race.
You are correct about Christianity, Gareth, and the only thing I can say is
1. Christians must remember to treat everyone with a certain code of respect
2. There is nothing I can say about what God thinks, because, it is God that is thinking.
I am more familiar with what Christians owe non-Christians than many readers here.
Did anyone look up "Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and no murderer has eternal life?" in a searchable Bible?
The idea is to live like Jesus did (because He is Lord as well as Savior), love, forgive, spread the message that the door is open to the Garden of Eden again (salvation)
However, a lot of bad apples are mixed in the barrel, and pretty soon non-Christians don't want apples any more.
Do you know what a vaccine is?
A vaccine is just like the real disease except it is weakened or harmless, but it causes the body's immune system to go on alert, so when the real disease comes, it can't take hold (hostile immune system)
False or weak Christians are Satan's vaccine for non-Christians against genuine Christians (hostile attitude)
I figured it out.
My cat is extremely friendly.
