I don't believe this.  Prince William County Virginia, about 20 miles south and 20 miles west of here (Woodbridge and Manassas) is slowly sliding toward Nazi Germany.

A couple of years ago Virginia didn't like the unmarried couples, notably the gays.  They passed a political amendment I hated, Amendment 1, which withdrew certain legal rights for unmarried partnerships.

Never mind what my religion is.  I do not believe Virginia or America is a theocracy.  If it were I'd run, because it might be someone else's theocracy tomorrow, not mine, and I might be cat food for the lions.

I had a co-worker quit: she and her partner left for Seattle, which seems to understand the separation of church and state.

And now they are going after the illegal aliens.

Ocampo..... I am thinking of you and Martin Niemoller....

--------------------------------------------

They went for the unmarried partners,
and I and 40% of Virginia voted against Amendment 1

They went for the illegal aliens,
and even though in principle I think immigration laws need enforcing,
why did we not enforce them for so long, and why are we creating an atmosphere of fear suddenty NOW?
She was Aspie friendly.  I wonder why.
(Rhetorical question).  Answer: because I believe we are natural allies in a hostile culture.
I actually live in the city of Alexandria.  Virginia has counties and it has cities like Alexandria, which are distinct and independent from counties, therefore called "independent cities".   Alexandria and the County of Arlington are friendlier to the Latinos.  We haven't started checking immigration status.
Winchester Virginia.  When my brother (presumably Aspie) was given a hard time by the neighbors, it was in Inwood WV (maybe 16 miles north).  Similar culture????

Just because you're a computer programmer and you don't know how to attract a woman doesn't mean you're gay, and it certainly doesn't mean your kids should stand back.
Just as I thought.  My brother and I don't fit in in

Bush to victory...American small towns....the bedrock of a permanent underclass ....a white ghetto of the working poor in which two in five people do not finish high school, nearly everyone over fifty has serious health problems and little or no health care, and credit ratings are virtually nonexistent.....from which alcohol, overeating, and Jesus are the preferred avenues of escape....mortgage and credit-card rackets that saddle the working poor with debt....the ubiquitous gun culture, factory jobs that are constantly on the verge of being outsourced....and the heady blend of Scots Irish culture with the blinkered ‘magical thinking’ of the Christian right.

Why not

1.  Wrong politics/Democrat not Republican
2.  Too much education/high school is guaranteed/college is likely
3.  Wrong social class/middle to upper middle class, not lower middle class/we are in WV to retire, not to work and live
4.  Wrong religion/effectively secular (myself until 1993) not Christian
5.  We are Aspies not NTs
6.  We are transplants from Kensington, Rockville, Waldorf, which are not small American towns..... but are wealthy suburbs of Washington DC

There ILLEGAL aliens, they should be carted back to where they came from.  They dont have any rights other then to not be beaten, not make money, and be deported.

It's sad that human beings can be thought of as 'illegal'.

Every country needs to guard its borders and enforce its laws.  It is called sovereignity.

But still, remember that illegal aliens are human beings.  Criminals have rights, it is not like they are terrorists trying to kill us.

Add being here to the list of things people will die trying to get

1.  drugs
2.  guns
3.  abortions
4.  being here

And I am sure someone will say, "xxxxx people a year died trying to get into the USA last year." just like "Between 1950 and 1970, xxxxx women died from illegal abortions."
Illegal is a poor choice of words.  Undocumented, or better yet, unauthorized, hits the nail on the head.

You know that sign at the restaurant: Authorized Personnel Only Beyond This Point?

I think as long as we build defenses they will build counterdefenses.  We build a nice wall there will be a booming business in an air cannon and inflated safety ball on the Mexican side and a net on the U.S. side.  Just pop-shoot them over the wall, you know?  Maybe the cannon and the net could each be on a mega trailer truck that could coordinate.

Would not work over a river crossing- would have to be a land crossing.

(We would need an exclusion zone around the border-- maybe 500 yards)

I have been known to go beyond this point on occasion.  Smile

They do treat students from foreign countries shabbily in the USA (the government).

International students need to be able to pay for American college educations without resorting to American sources of assistance.  Federal financial aid loans, grants, and work study: forget it, those are for citizens, permanent residents, and certain types of refugees.

It's not like we want them begging their way through school.  Give us your rich kids or stay home, or go through proper channels, get a green card, save up a ton of money, and then go to school.

The will in America to fill our colleges with people from foreign countries, or fill our colleges with our own people, is absent.

I don't believe that building a wall will prevent undocumented immigrants from entering the US. Mexico is not the only source of undocumented immigrants, there are undocumented immigrants from other nations as well, some came here legally due to a tourist or student visa and never left or came here through human trafficiking (modern day slavery). If anyone remembers about the Berlin Wall or studied about it in history class, the wall did not prevent all East Germans from escaping, some actually succeeded and over 400 East Germans were killed trying to escape.

Ok, you're marked down as discriminatory. Why are you proud of that?
I like your signature. Good advice.

Oh well, those families should be allowed to stay in the country and gain citizenship. Gareth's ideas sound very sensible too.

Whoa!!!Stop people. There are people who dislike immigrants ALL OVER THE US, not just S. VA. VA is really two states you know- N. and S.

Rein in the Southern stereotypes for a minute. I know for a friggin FACT Hope does better here than she would in a lot of places in the US BECAUSE the people are church-going and at least THINK about the golden rule a little. I wouldn't live in Philly for love or money although her sorta blank face and reluctance to smile would make it easier for her to fit in in some ways.

As a result of the above both the kids and teachers here and in Atlanta where we used to live were usually VERY tolerant of Hope and her eccentricities. Even our pricey expert advised us to put her in a private church school also for the above reasons. The people are just kinder when they are not being religious hypercrites.

Now, it isn't across the board, but I have found that both the South in general and small towns in particular (where everyone knows everybody else for the most part) are helpful to Aspies. There is less bullying if everyone has more or less gotten at least subtly the "memo" that Hope is a bit different.

Re gays, I would venture that fully 60% of Americans, whereever they live, are not very knowledgable about whether it is a choice or not (it's not of course). Meher Baba referred once to a gay man's friend as his "pal", so if homosexuality is ok with the Avatar it is OK with me (always has been actually).

Do your part in debunking the myth that it is wrong because the bible says so. I do!

Re rednecks, there are more rednecks in places like PA, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and the west than there are in the entire friggin south by a wide margin. At least our rednecks have manners here (though some don't and are mean as hell) Big Grin

Re race- I've said this a million times, but what the hell I'll say it again, the south is loaded with sisters and brothers and we love each other down here. We sure as HELL have tried longer and harder to solve the race problem than ANY other single region in the US. I have tons of black friends and go to their churches on occasion- can a Seattle-ite or Californian or someone from Arizona make that claim? Do they even know anything about black culture in MN or anywhere else outside the south for that matter? We love each other and we mix socially here, unlike the rest of the US. Religion will come next- many churches are integrated now, all over the US actually but particularly (I've noticed- drumroll- in the South).

At this point Barack's race should no longer be an issue. The fact that is still is is testiment to how race-obsessed and biased the US in general is. Jesus, me and Bill Clinton are probably more black than he is and I am not kidding!

I wonder if the kind of blank face and not smiling much is a common feature of Asperger's. I've been told the same thing - that I'm inscrutable. I don't see why women should be expected to smile all the time anyway.

It makes sense that a smaller community would normally be more tolerant of individuals since "everybody knows everybody" but it does depend.
