Seriously, you should read Deer Hunting With Jesus. It's about rednecks in W It was written by a guy who is a democrate journalist but he was born and raised in Virginia and the book is about his observations on his town and its people when he goes back as a middle aged man. It's very well written, with equal doeses of serious insight and humour.

Whoops. I hit post before I was ready. The book is set in Winchester Virginia.
Consider that in a democracy, the will of the majority is done... whether or not that decision is a good idea. And if the majority are extremists? Yep--scary prospect, isn't it? Your county looks like it's an example of just such a phenomenon. At least we have a republic, which slows down the direct will of the people a little... instead, you have to elect representatives, and that means that the lawmakers tend to be moderate, and short-term whims won't be as damaging as they could be.
Seems to me that it's all about the almighty dollar. Sad

What blows me away about rednecks is how most of them vote for the Republicans, a party which obviously helps out the rich at the expense of the poor. Republicnas couldn't give a *** about the working poor, so why do the working poor vote for them?
To get another perspective on Mexican immigration, it's very informative to listen to the Carlos Mencia CDs eg. "America Rules", "Live & Uncut", or "No Strings Attached".

Dost thou mind if I disagree with you, and Guess Who. I have nothing against Guess Who and I realise that the two of you contribute here frequently.

I myself am part Amerindian when the truth be told and yet I don't agree in open borders, come one come all, nonsense. I'm sure that it's an unsettling thing to see anyone getting rounded up, but is that what you actually have seen, because I have lived in both Canada and the "South" or Southeast all of my life and have never seen so much as a single person questioned.

In fact I once saw a "gentleman" reading "Nuestro Hombre Noriega. Milliones en Drugos y Armamentos" right at the immigration facility in N. Miami.

The world is going to hell today anyhow, so roll with it.

I'm not sure what part of my post you're disagreeing with, Saint.

Well, I thought the first post was rather hyperbolic and don't think Virginia would be any more hate-filled than any other state in the US.

I am so over people sticking the boot into illegal aliens, refugees and welfare recipients. If you want point the finger at someone point it the 5% of the world's population that control 95% of the world's wealth, while the other 95% of us squabble over the remaining 5%.

And why do people always stick the boot into illegal aliens? What about the unscrupulous employers who hire them rather than paying a fair wage to US citizens?

Onya Creasy! When are racists going to realise that there are vested interests in keeping a pool of low paid aliens working in countries such as the USA? Instead of blaming the people who are just like any of us in trying to do the best for themselves and their families, look at the greedy ones exploiting them.

I felt bad that I took a potshot like this.  I apologise to anyone I offended.

I like the discussions on this list, but I don't like it when someone strays from a rational discussion to spew emotional abuse.  I am really sorry.

I would like to ask a closely related question.  Taking the argument that the illegal immigrants are not okay, if only b/c they are breaking the law...

What's the consensus on plans that offer amnesty?

There are legal ways to get amnesty, they are here illegaly.  Pack them in a bus and send them back to mexico.

Well then, I think the bus would have to be at least as big as Noah's ark.

My views on illegal immigrants are quite simple:

Come down hard on the employers that pay lower wages to them. This is something that even the racist scum should agree with as it removes all incentive to hire cheaper labour.

Next, check all illegal immigrants to see if they are actually asylum seekers and if so, allow them to work like everyone else and legalise their residency. The idea of a work permit is just silly - the only alternative besides working is for somebody to live off welfare (and thus burden the state) or turn to crime.

After that, the ones who are truly illegal immigrants can be deported.
Anyone who believes homosexuality is wrong for whatever reason (religious included) is a bigot. I do not care if you are a bigot because your sacred text tells you to be - the fact somebody could call a book which instructs homosexuality is wrong as a sacred text says a lot. Thankfully many modern christians do the selective ignorance thing on that point (the same as they aren't out stoning people either).
Being gay is not evil, I don't care what your religion says on the subject. You say homosexuality is a "sin" - that is essentially hate speech, but i'm not going to waste my time arguing about it.

the whole of St. Paul `s christianity is based on a white lie and more importantly the "vision" of a madman who did not know Jesus.(after all Paul or Saul as I prefer to call him,was a jew who was a roman citizen, who hated jews. thats why he was a bounty -hunter and tax collector) If you accept Jesus than you must know and understand the things he said ( read the banned books from the Nag Hammadi library) most importantly to love all and in order to gain Nirvana or heaven , to do service to all mankind.Jesus neither put down the gay person or the harlot , or the samaritan or the gentile and neither should we.

I don't accept jesus (not christian) but I will say that "thou shalt not lie with a man as with a woman for it is an abomination" seems fairly clear in how homophobic it is. Lev 18:22

Technically, this was god speaking to moses, so indeed - jesus isn't the one who said it. Sodom and other references come to mind. According to the bible, homosexuality is indeed sinful - thus why I consider christianity a homophobic religion, unless one practices selective ignorance when reading the bible which makes you guilty of hypocrisy.
