I thought this was pretty neat : The place I take my son for his private speech/OT had a panthlet on an Autism Boot Camp that is being run locally. I copied this excerpt from the brochure:

"The Autism Awareness Boot camp is geared towards educating parents of neurotypical children about autism, supporting other families in their communities, teaching their children tolerance and acceptance, and supporting others dealing with autism."

Just wanted your thoughts Smile
My typical son is very good about playing with all kids. My autistic son is in special needs sports where most of the children are autistic and my son asks them to play with him all the time. He enjoys going to his brothers sports - he actually came to be friends with his little girl with autism. They look for each other each week. Its so cute. I'm very proud that he is so accepting. Smile
When I read the title, I thought you were talking about a boot camp for autistic kids. Smile
It sounds like a good idea. It seems that a lot of people know about autism, but they don't understand what it is or how it affects the people who have it. I say, more power to them!

Which angle are you coming from, Ian? You've got me intrigued! Smile

I would guess the angle of re-educating those who disagree with you?

just hazarding a guess.

That doesn't help, Pika. Sorry.

just saying, knowing Ian, that that might be what he meant.

Well it's true Tongue

awwright....

see?

Smile I could see that. I guess I should have come up with a better title. I definately think it would do some good in our children gaining acceptance.  I never heard about autism till college and that was only because I was majoring in Psychology.

I thought the same as Omlette, and I'm glad I was wrong. I can think of a few people who could do with this sort thing! All listed on my Wiki as Aspie Enemies!

How can they be re-educated if the predudice is unthinking? if it is instinctual? Tongue

The same way criminals can be deprogrammed from instinctive criminal behaviour?

but would that make us any better than the rotenburg centre?

Yes - unless they use extreme aversion therapy (which is what the JRC does).

It is still reprogramming traits intricate to the personality of the individual.
admittedly, it is a different situation, but the hypocrisy stands.

But you can't deprogramme all criminal behaviour. If a person is a sociopath, they might well realise their behaviour is objectively "wrong" but they don't care and their internal logic excuses their actions. They are generally unable to be rehabilitated and the best thing to do is put them in prison never to be released.
