What exactly is this topic about? Culture isn't something you plan, it just happens.

to discuss...oh damn. this is a double of the layout thread, isnt it?

ok, going to try some face saving here :p

its to discuss the facilities and...policies..? that might be required to foster a healthy culture

Also how to inspire various existing autistic cultures towards an interest in the island.

*nods franticaly*

anyway, lets get this on topic (note, if i happen to crosspost atop of Luai, she takes precedent Tongue)

Religion; Main Thread, page 8

I think this requires more insight.
would we want to avoid placing certain religions within proximity of others?

It would probably be helpful to start by working out what we mean by culture.  Is it ok for me to say "we" - I kinda feel like I'm butting in here, but I'm really inspired by this.

Anyway, what is culture?  Those aspects of life which are not essential for life, but which give it meaning?  Are we talking about all forms of art, and does this include architecture?  Cultural interests and creativities will have their own dynamic, but it would be good at this stage to think about how important they will be and how they will be accommodated - physically and imaginatively.

Maybe think about clusters of studio spaces - in and around my beautiful underground/hilltop sanctuary! Smile  Interaction of art and technology would be interesting to explore...

Mmmm... not making much sense.  Will have a coffee and think some more about this.

one of my lecturers is interested in church architecture and alternative worship spaces so I could ask him for some pointers on that one.

of course you are not butting in!
just because four of us happen to have really really taken to this, doesnt mean that others cant Tongue

we still havent decided on the actual style of the buildings.
Luai wants to do a layout overview, and if you wish to contribute in any way whatso ever, please, please, please do so. even if its just a few sketches of some buildings or w/e

I dare you to put the Synagogue nextdoor to the Mosque.

>F

note that on the the oh so very crude drawing i did earlier, there was a nice park in the middle, and a generous space between each building. thus the problem of noise can also be eliminated.

Perhaps we should be a bit startrek/wars and have generic religious buildings? you know..nice neutral architecture, acceptible for all Smile

this had crossed my mind.
but..i think when and if we design a religious plaza type area, we want to put emphasis on, "look, here we have Pagan, Christian, Muslims, Jews etc etc all next to each other, and in tolerance of one another.

As for the religious buildings....

There are many places in the world where more than one group shares the same building.  College campuses in the US do this regularly (saves money).  Ian's sarcastic attempt to divide the community prior to formation aside, I really don't see a problem there.

As for the rest of the culture, if we're building an island retreat for aspies, obviously it's going to have a designed culture, at least starting out.  It can be as subtle as building art museums rather than gardens, or as obvious as scheduling the mandatory "Final Fantasy Discussion Group" after lunch every day.  (That would be sarcasm)

While I don't like to impose my feelings on this matter, I think that the culture will be in large part set by the island being a "showpiece" for aspies everywhere.

whilst it would be very much possible to share buildings between faiths, this would deny us an oppotunity to have some stunning architecture. and, again, it reinforces the whole "acceptance and equality" theme.

and yes, to begin with the culture would have to be structured, the better to mould it into a healthy, varied culture in the long run.

and please, impose away Wink

Hmmm,

What other sides of culture would the island have?  Would the island be a place of quiet and solitude, like a sterotypical monastic community, or would it be a loud, brash community of constant parades?

Imagine, for a moment, that you hear about the aspie island.  What thoughts come into your mind when you think of an aspie island?  What would you want to do, as a visitor or as a tourist?  What would draw you to return to the island again?

A quiet place, with..I think the only word is "beautiful" architechture, a unique place, where there is always a nice area of solitude, with the option to mingle with other people like myself.

Will there be a yoghurt factory on this island?

not..that kind of culture Tongue

and anyway, thats a layout question, surely?

hmm...

Tau architecture...all sweeping and smooth lines.
Isaac Asimov's Foundation had nice architecture..
Corusant had nice architecture.
Ian, just remember that we the island may be built on a budget.  The designs you are refering to are probably going to be expensive.
Very well then.  Here's a question, do you think most meals will be in "public" places, or in the private residences?
