I thought leaving the theater after watching Sicko, I am leaving for Canada or Britain, my own native country America has an inferior concept of civilization (mass health care at least for routine stuff like broken bones and infectious disease).
The answer is not to run away, the answer is to fix it, unless of course, you're a Jew and you're in Nazi Germany.

I studied Spanish, I think I could learn to speak it in a total immersion environment (I mean not the USA). Good grades 5 years. From what I know of Andorra it is between Spain and France (Pyrenees), on The Onion.com someone in the state dept thought it was a poor country in Africa). Catalan makes sense. Incidentally, how is the Basque independence movement (ETA) doing?

I am beginning to wonder if declaring war on Iran back in 1979 wouldn't have forestalled some of our problems in the present: I mean, there are those on the Discovery Times channel who suggest on specials like Guests of the Allytollah that our hesitation during the Carter administration strengthened the resolve of later terrorists. We would have had international law as an excuse in 1979 (to storm an embassy is an act of war). I don't know, though. Every flap of a butterfly's wings, a ripple effect, what would that have done to U.S.-Soviet history???

Vieques.... Usually in eminent domain they buy someone's property without a choice, like a TV movie they siezed a pacifist's ranch for a missile base. But the idea is to "pay" them for it. Why leave civvies around though on a Navy bombing range?
Do we really need Guantanamo or could we maybe in 20 years have another base on another island, maybe uninhabited? Symbolically a nice gesture to our neighbors in the hemisphere?

I agree, Marcia. It was a bad move overthrowing the Prime Minister in 1953 and replacing him with the Shah. Just to keep the oil companies happy becuase the Iranian PM wanted to nationalize the oil. Very very very very very very bad move. We could have invested in nuclear, solar, wind.... sure, a little more expensive than oil, but it was cheaper to interfere in the politics of a sovereign country Iran against the democratic wishes of the Iranian people. (USA and democracy, right..... )
Still..... now here we are and we have terrorism. It is regretful B3 (big bully Bush) is not in the mood to think renewables in a hurry over getting out of the Middle East in a hurry. The sooner we are not their *** any more the better.
I hope the next President says
1. I'm really sorry we thought it was a good idea to interfere in your democracy and human rights
2. No, the United Nations says Israel has a right to exist, and we agree. Go ahead with nuclear power but don't become one, because you will immediately become a nuclear target
3. Please do not interfere with Iraq or sponsor terrorism, and we will not sponsor efforts to disrupt the workings of your own internal affairs either

Don't joke about such things. Nobody is laughing any more.

It honestly scares me, if Obama wins a fair fight with Hillary and the Repubs, will the KKK and other white suprems just let him take office?
It only takes one mad man with a gun and America has many madmen with guns (forget about the Middle East, they have them too).
I guess if we didn't try, they would have won already. I am glad we are seriously thinking of African American and women Presidents and I hope we have one (Obama, original ideas such as relief for predatory mortgage victims).
Now, with respect to terrorism purportedly in the name of Allah (who hates attacks on the peaceful), I feared the DC sniper attacks when they happened in my own back yard. Why we don't have a few dozen going on all the time, I don't know, with all the madmen and guns so plentiful in the world, and it being so easy to smuggle both into any country. (Heck, just smuggle in the madmen, America has plenty of guns!)

This war on terrorism seems to be going with kid gloves. Why on earth doesn't Al Qaeda fight with good old fashioned men with guns which terrorizes plenty of people in places like the Middle East? Why is it WMD this, WMD that?
Unless our Government is cooking up the threat just to scare us, instead of there really being a bunch of angry Muslims wanting to spill American blood on American soil.
Random snipings would do more disruption and fear and spill more American blood in the short term than anything Al Qaeda has done in years.
BE HAPPY THE THREAT IS OVERRATED, IT SEEMS. BUT WHY DOES THE GOVERNMENT WANT US AFRAID? WHAT DOES IT WANT TO DO WITH OUR FRIGHTENED COOPERATION? Take over oil rich countries? A resource war? Or, if 20 or 30 years from now, if fresh water, oil, and/or food are scarce, maybe we need a military to annihilate everyone else on Earth to keep them from taking our dwindling crop yields, oil drilling, and aquafers from us?

Two words: Secret Service.

Professional counterterrorist and author Gayle Rivers said of the Irish Republican Army after a failed attempt to fire an RPG and blow up the British cabinet:

"We need to be lucky once. You need to be lucky always."
The fact that terrorists never give up, even when ex-members are jailed or killed, should make you think.
Rivers does not support imprisoning terrorists. He does not let them surrender. A jailed terrorist is simply an excuse for their buddies to have an incident to bargain for his release.
Rivers does not take prisoners, even if they surrender. A dead terrorist is of no use to his comrades and cannot be bargained for.

Rivers would also kill non-combatant support staff (cooks) in a terrorist training camp "If you feed a killer, you will die when he does" (The War Against the Terrorists, How To Win It)
