Wow--this is so sad and scary.  Especially the farmer story--I cannot believe his wife is happy with him.  Such so-called mercy killings suggest that disabled individuals have no quality of life, and therefore no right to decide whether or not they get to live.

Odd it seems when feminists will campaign that women have rights over their bodies and to have abortions for any reason and then turn around and condemn gender selective abortion in Asia as femicide.  I guess they are the same feminists who think that women should have equality in the workplace yet exploit third world immigrant nannies in their own homes, using them as slaves.

Um, what does this have to do with parents killing their disabaled children?

Probably - you'll usually find a history of the parents desperately trying to find help and continually being knocked back, or if they do get help, it isn't effective or doesn't last long enough.
It's difficult because it's not just a matter of making one intervention and everything is going to be all right from then on. Parents of handicapped kids need ongoing support and this doesn't end when the child turns 12, 16 or 18 or 21, and this is at odds with help programmes that are short term and limited in scope. Trouble is, providing ongoing support costs money and taxpayers complain about rising taxes.
Autismspeaks says that parens feel really upset when their kid is not what they wanted.  Is says they should scream or what.  Even if they get that Insultingly upset, they shouldn't kill the kid.
Wow that is great that you do that Smile . I actually joined on here for the same reasons you listed. Its great to be able to talk to adults and get the scoop so you can better understand your child and see what he can become.

I think it would really help if these moms got integrated into a proper community where they'd have regular contact with adults with the same disability their child has. That would really give them hope, I think. When it's just a kid and you are worrying about developmental milestones and seeing how he doesn't measure up, it looks very dark sometimes... but then you could meet an adult who's doing fine, thanks, even if life isn't quite perfect, and figure that it's worth it to bring up that child. They really underestimate disabled people, especially disabled kids. Sometimes I think if people only knew what it was like to be disabled--that it's not as bad as they think--if they met disabled people and hung out with them and saw they were just people--they wouldn't be as likely to kill a child in the mistaken belief that it's merciful.

That's why I spend time on Autism Speaks forums. Not necessarily because I think these moms are homicidal, but because I know they benefit from hearing that it gets better, and getting a realistic picture of what it's probably going to be like for their kids when they grow up. There's other more low-functioning people there to cover the other parts of the spectrum... I think most of us are actually pretty autism-rights types, and there for the same reason I am Smile

AprilBaker didn't say any of that - sorry!!

I do think parents need support in order to do this very important job well, but lack of support does not condone the taking of another life.

In 1969, my sister's first job as a brand new special eduacator was to follow up on leads that there was a child with disabilities at an address.  She knocked on doors and assembled her first class.

She was the first support many of these parents ever had.  So many babies were just sent away like in "The Memory Keeper's Daughter."

Thanks for keeping us updated!!

I wrote to the person who wrote the editorial about the boy with autism being removed from the home b/c

"The parents are opposed to the use of psychotropic drugs and argue that Nate has had strong negative reactions to them. They point to success they've had with an alternative, holistic approach that focuses on diet and psychiatric counseling. The government disagreed (http://www.ocregister.com/column/nate-pa...ment-court)."

The reporter replied, "Not yet. This is probably going to take a very long time."

Recent psychological research indicates that the majority of the population has a very mild form of Schizophrenia as a result of the bicameral nature of our brain. The reason few people are ever diagnosed is that most never develop a problem and the voices never act upon the negative suggestions. Only those who become a danger to themselves or others are diagnosed.
