Does anyone have expierience in the treatment of depression in adolescence with lustral/zoloft sertraline?

Our 12 year old boy diagnosed between PDD-NOS and ADHD got a prescription for 50mg/day after only one meeting with the psychiatrist.
It is clear to me, that he suffers from depression, but I'm not really sure, if medication is the right way at all.
I think I would also be very sceptical.

Thank you Ivar.
Do you have any experience with SSRI-drugs?
Have you ever experienced the feeling of depression DocMartin?
Maybe you could let your son trial this medication - aim to keep him on the lowest possible effective dose.
Not me.

Not had much experience with drugs whatsoever.
I take an anti-depressant myself, but I read an interesting article this morning, that the reason these drugs seem to work is not because of the drugs of themselves, but because we BELIEVE they will work.  There seems to be a very strong placebo effect.

Given that this category of drugs has very real and scary potential side effects when used on an adolescent, I would NOT use medication except as an absolute last resort.

You know what I would try?  Find a vitamin or something harmless and tell your child it will make him feel better.  See what happens.
PS -  I also know from personal experience that once you start on anti-depressents, it is VERY difficult to go off of them.  PLEASE eliminate every other alternative before placing your child on such a drug.

Yes Lucie, I take lustral myself, after no other treatment worked.
The problem is, that I expierience side effects, even if I take a quite low dose. I'm not sure, if drugs should be number one on the list of trials.

Thanks, DW_a_mom, I think, I think we'll try the placebo idea together with counselling.

I heard the article on a news report - I don't believe it - we had a pharmacist come to talk to us for a course today - she suggested it was a way to cut back on govt. health funding. I am sure many more studies have proved differently.

I would rather evaluate side effects of meds. than compare the risks and benefits of medication. Try them for a short trial - test the drug for  side effects and benefits.
