An interview with parents that I found, dramatically called "The stolen child", shows examples of the medias sensationalist approach to autism, heres an excerpt- The very word “autism” carries such a sense of dread and terror that well-meaning professionals often desist from making a clear diagnosis, preferring to use the more nebulous catch-all “pervasive developmental disorder.” Dr. Isabelle Rapin, a professor of pediatric neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, says, “autism is … the cancer of the developmental disorders.”
The irony of of a Professor from Albert Einstein college, (its strongly considered Albert Einstein was on the autistic spectrum) comparing autism with cancer is very concerning, parents are given these very negative impressions, which fill them with fear at their child diagnosis, and organisations like CAN and ABA therapists take full advantage of these fears.

WOW! A clear case of untreated bullying:
It wasn’t until Connor was expelled from his third preschool—for throwing a heavy bookshelf over in a rage—and withdrew into silence
and child abuse:
“This is a child who was screaming and banging his head into walls,”
in the same story. Yes, lets cure autism because society is failing him. Better still, lets abort healthy babies because we'd rather change someone else before we have to change ourselves. This makes our lives easier therefore it's better. And when we have our better kid we can put him on Ritalin to counteract the effects of the Sunny Delight and junk food we feed into him everyday because we are too ignorant to look beyone our own selfishness.
Eugenics - making the world a better place for those who are already better than everyone else.
Don't be a silly,

Come and join the Nazi Party!
Still, the AGRE data bank looks useful?
the AGRE data bank is for genetic researchers.
*cough* pre-natal screening *cough*
it's run by CAN

Understood Gareth, but still it's open to all; that must be a good thing? After all, it may lead to indisputable proof that "autism" is essential to human progress (if we keep on the case?)!
AGRE isnt open to all from what I've seen, you have to subscribe or participate.
from what i've heard you have to apply for access to the databank and then give a description of your project and it's aims etc, then it goes before a committee or something
This smacks of selective membership whereby they only allow those who agree with all they say and do can enter - keep out those who disagree?
Typical of those who want to change us and cure us - force us to listen to their biased opinion and welcome us as long as we agree with them
Debs
I don't know how much information is on offer for those who can get access to the information but if I had contributed to this project I would want some safeguards to protect my data within so that all and sundry couldn't get their hands on sensitive information.
Perhaps someone could email them (AGRE) and find out as to why exactly this information is so closely guarded and to what sort of audience they are aiming their research at and why?
Hopefully AGRE won't turn out to be an OGRE

AGRE isn't conducting research itself, it's a collection of tissue samples available for others to come along and use for research
of course the main type of research is hunting for a genetic marker leading one day to pre-natal screening
Personally, I think more time and expense should be spent on helping people who are already born and not trying to prevent people from being born because they "might" be "defective".
We still don't have a real cure for cancer or diabetes or cystic fibrosis, just to name a few. However, there have been encouraging advances in the treatment of the first two conditions at least, but there is still a long way to go.
