I know wikipedia's only as reliable as the people contributing to it, but this line made me chuckle:

Quote:
The eating of a Balut can often trigger off a fit of screaming, one notable example of this was survivor contestant Denise...

The way it's worded, it sounds like some strange and mystical power of the dish induces an involuntary scream, but it's probably just the person realising what the hell they're eating and freaking out!  Smile

Would I?  Probably not.  I have a record of eating some rather strange things when the opportunity arises, mind you I draw the line at anything still alive - I can't handle those restaurants where they have tanks of live things you can pick out to have boiled alive.  At least knock it on the head first!

I do not feel comfortable eating other creatures, whether they are yet born or not.
But it is alive when it is placed in a pot of boiling water (that's how they are cooked). Because eggs are mostly water, and water has one of the highest specific heat capacities of all known chemicals, the temperature inside the egg would rise relatively slowly (and this effect would be compounded by any insulating effects of the shell). The chick would therefore suffer a slow, excruciatingly painful, and inhumane death as it was being cooked.
why not dare people to eat natto or durian?  It has the same 'freak appeal' but no one gets hurt,  Natto especial has multisensory feak appeal
wow, I've read its good but really stinky
Speaking of weird stuff to chow down on, I found this site through Stumbleupon and find it strangely fascinating: http://www.thesneeze.com/mt-archives/cat...eat_it.php
I guess I would
ick no!  My uncle ate a dish considered a delicacy. I forget what it was called but it was unborn lamb.  I thought that sounded rather perverse. But I won't eat veal either.

For those unfamiliar with it, here's an article on it.

sure probably taste like chicken

Yugh.
Janet, you've just given me nightmares.  That said, I had dinner with friends who have traveled overseas for an important business meeting and they were served (if my memory is correct) such a dish but it was definately without the animal it originally came packaged in.  The lady telling the story said that when it was placed before them, their host sat back beaming a smile that said "ENJOY".  Clearly he thought he was giving them a real treat. I asked what on earth she did.  She shrugged and said "we ate it".
This thread reminds me of a joke played on someone during Thanksgiving.  The joker waited until the hostess (his sister-in-law) was out of the room, removed the stuffing from the turkey and shoved a Cornish Hen in there instead.  When the turkey was carved, she got a startling surprise. Her mother said "You've cooked a pregnant bird". The hostess burst into tears and it took over an hour to assure her that turkeys only lay eggs.

Silky. I am crazy about your little poodle!!

*smiles and thanks Janet... while keeping the maltipoo a good distance away from the thrill seeking diners in this thread *

Yes.  I would.
I'm going to the Philippines in 12 days time - and that's one think I won't be eating!!
