oh, duh. i forgot that :dumb:

*Designing houses to use natural light would reduce electricity. Utilizing underground space would greatly decrease heating/cooling prices.

as i said, this is a first draft of the first section. just throwing it out for feedback, and for anyone to suggest things.

*We shouldn't limit ourself just because of a websites name. The chances are that setting something up on the mainland will way more practical.

again, the first section only.

*Before we figure out the details of this we should sort out who would be willing to be a part of it. I'm in college right now, but I plan on being a self employed artist, so if the location suits my tastes then I'll go along.

this is merely an..intellectual exercise right now, merely to see if it is practical.

Don't let yourself be limited in terms of energy use.  There are tons of inovative ways to recycle and.or reduce energy.  Two of the coolest ones I've heard recently were 1) a building whose floors moved subtly when stepped on, not enough to be noticed but enough to generate a significant amount of energy; and 2) devices that, when strapped to your legs, gather enough energy from the motion of your knees to run up to 10 cellphones or 2 computers.
I definitely think that any such island project should try to build structures that utilize technology to the fullest ability we have right now, but which also utilize nature- such as was mentioned above, with the use of natural light.  We can also make use of geothermal heat, etc.  There's a lot to keep in mind.

hmm....would you be willing to submit a short passage about them?

Ian Wrote:
Perhaps you should go for the most cost effective option ;p

no, this is merely an intellectual activity.
i intend to explore all the available technology, and leave the conclusions up to the reader :p

Ian Wrote:
In that case you should list the most cost effective options too -.o

but we dont know what they are yet. perhaps in a final summary, at the very end of the document, but i have yet to do most of it.

Ian Wrote:
Maybe you could use a waste from energy system.

Two birds with one stone ;p

how do you mean?

anyway, this is just the infrastructure, i have yet to get down to how the whole thing would most optimum to lay out. not to mention the house setups...

Ian Wrote:
***! lol.

I mean a energy from waste system.

you mean....burning solid waste?

could do...i'll go over that later, but ideally i want to stay as green and most of all autonomus as possible

hmm...as I read it, its still very dirty; to the point of being banned in many countries....

Waste to Energy

The process of burning what waste cannot be recycled

Pros;
Free?
Deals (in part) with the waste problem, as well as contributing to the power problem.
Cheap initial cost

Cons;
As the material being incinerated would be…rubbish..there would be a slight problem with pollution.
Smelly
Dirty.

there ya go, happy now? Tongue
anything you see you disagree with, let me know, eh? ^_^

not always a good thing, my entrepreneur friend...

consider this; it might be cheap to build right now, but the costs involved in making it clean, and keeping it clean, might stretch to far higher than any of the others in the long run

Ian Wrote:
Hey I know that ;p

Quality goods pay for themselves multiple times over.

I may teach myself biz but I like to think i'm thorough lol

Ian

then i need not explain to you about the potential long term costs?
its not an ideal solution, but as i have said, this is just an intellectual exercise.

and yes, i have included it in the document :p

Ian Wrote:
Your "intellectual exercises" are gonna get you in trouble someday, son :p

how so? :p

Ian Wrote:
Well i'll either give you a good natured whack or you'll do a black mesa esque brain fart.

take your pick ;p

hm...I'll go Black Mesa :p
that said, Black Mesa opened portals to Xen, got stormed by the military, and then nuked, all within about 24 hours...so..maybe not Tongue

(go ahead and leave me...i think i prefer to stay inside...maybe you'll find someone else to help you...maybe black mesa? THAT WAS A JOKE, HAHA,FAT CHANCE.)

excellent Zakkie Big Grin

and that has been added....with credits attached.

as for industry...i hadnt actualy considered that, i'm stilll thinking through infrastructure.

and yes. i completely forgot rain /facepalm
heh, i can just see flocks of migrating birds being....decimated...by the trailing cables.
ok, changes made so far;

added Luai, Paradox and Ian to credits section.

EZs notes on tidal power
Luai's notes on Kite generators
Ians suggestion about Waste to Energy
EZ's notes on Rain and cesspits..(should those be on seperate lines? Tongue)
EZ's notes on Laser uplinks and Satillites
EZ's notes on Transport

whew.... i would like somebody to comment on the lights section though...personally, i would lean towards the contextual ones...
oh damn;

which would people like me to do next; a new town, or a neighbourhood?

*grins* That would be a good idea - wouldn't want to mix them up in design, then find out after construction...

As far as lights go, whichever style you go for, I say ditch the usual flourescents - those things are harsh. Perhaps long-life LEDs?

Contextual lighting's a good idea, but you'd need to work out electrical comparisons before picking it as the winner - motion sensors may be as or more draining than just leaving the lights on.

Also, you'd want some intentional dark areas that people could escape to - for special events, candlelit picnics, or just to get away...

hence my mentioning of say, a button to turn it off.
