Hi, have just found this thread and had a quick skim through.  I don't like street lights at all, so if you must have them maybe they could be on some kind of motion sensors.  Limits light pollution and saves energy!

Reading through the development of this idea reminded me of a community in Scotland, which I haven't visited but which gets occasional media attention - as a success story in alternative living/community.  Googled to get their website and here's the link thingy if anyone fancies taking a look.  From what I've seen here it doesn't seem like a million miles away, although not on an island!

I've noticed a fair few new speed limit signs here which are powered by their own individual solar panels.  (They show a happy face if you're at the right speed and a sad face if you're too fast.)  If solar power works in Scotland it should work anywhere!  You could  use solar panels for street lights - energy efficient and no need to lay cables!

Councils'll likely replace them anyway in a few years time and Ian could buy them up for the island at a bargain price!

Not suggesting that you'd put your hand in your own pocket, of course, Ian.  You'd negotiate on price!

this is a cool idea, but not very socially practical because things can be learnt from living with normal people. and we will probably get bombed. As ethnic clensing or somthing.

I've had an idea bouncing around in my head for a while now about a church built into the top of a hill so that from a distance there seems to be no building there at all.  The idea comes from an article and pictures I saw in a magazine of my mother's when I was a child.  I can still see the pictures - someone had build an underground house which still had loads of light coming in.  It was circular and in the middle was a round courtyard garden with a pool in it.  This was surrounded by a kind of covered terrace and the rooms led off it.  It was amazing!

My idea would be for some kind of worship space or sanctuary which is set into the top of a hill so that natural light comes in from large arched windows in separate "room" which are connected to a large central space.  Here light would come in from a large circular glazed part of the roof.  The shape of the building would be determined by the landscape and would be very simple and organic with no straight lines or sharp angles.  Lots of plants and water - different spaces for people to use for different purposes - worship, meditation, music, drama, art and so on.  

In terms of construction I think you'd be looking at scooping out the top of the hill, building in the hollow created and having a super strong roof which can be planted with grass, maybe trees? or an astronomically aligned stone circle?...

Does this make any sense?  I have a very good picture in my head of what it would look like, but it's hard to describe in words.  It would be a very peaceful soothing place which would encourage a sense of the transcendent as well as a sense of community and belonging.

Recently, I've found myself eyeing up likely looking hilltops.

How about nanobots and computer turrets to protect the island from hostile NTs? I already have some rough designs and concepts prepared, I first developed them as I trudged through regular schooling in my much young years before I started to be homeschooled as I currently am. I think I just need some more development and then just the facilities to produce my inventions.

How do you get around the coast of this Island? May I suggest jet skis? Jet skis are the greatest form of water transportation.

I don't know how well this will be received, but would it be possible to have a colosseum in which we could have NT slaves battle each other. I'm just throwing that out there of course, slavery is generally unjust but if this is an AS utopia then surely we should be able to deal with NTs as we like in this utopia.
