I just found out that scientists are determined to look for a cure for autism. But the Aspies seem to have a problem with this cure. They say that we don't need a cure, why is that? Are they happy being Aspie? I'm an Asperger's and for some reason I'm not proud of it.
What's wrong with curing it? If you guys think we shouldn't find a cure for Asperger's or high functioning autism. Why don't we find a cure for the ones who are low functioning?
What's the deal with this issue? I'm new to researching the disorder, so please don't be offended.
Why are you "happy" as an Aspie? It's a question.
Hi Lucario,
I'm not sure what 'they' mean by 'cure' as opposed to 'treatment'.
I'm not sure if a cure would kill the me I am so the 'new and improved me' would take my place.Would I have the same feelings, thoughts and memories?
Does cure mean prevention, like aborting the fetus who may be Autisic.
Treatment would mainly be to prevent seizures or medication for killer mood swings which already exist.
I truly doubt that there could be a "cure" for Autism is not an issue of chemical imbalance, but instead an issue of alternative "wiring" in the brain. Therefore, it is doubtful that anything could really be done once the brain has developed. While it is possible that a test could be developed for Autism, that too remains far off due to the high likelihood that Autism is the result of many genes. We cannot even test for any eye color except for blue and Autism is much more complicated than eye color.
A lot smarter and more insightful than I was at age 10, from reading this. Where are the "average intelligence" Aspies, like me? Do they exist?
Hah, I'm right here. I took 2 I.Q tests. One from my psychoanalyst another from a book.
96+psycho and 115 = book test.
I'm average.
I'm NT and very good at math as is my father. (also NT) As a matter of fact when we use to have math bee's (competitions) in our class everyone fought over me for their team. Hmm. So your saying my brain is wired more autistic? My son on the spectrum loves numbers / counting also.
A simpler benefit that Autistics have over nt’s (ones that are good at maths I am referring to) is that maths is fun, our brains are wired into a way that triggers pleasure from doing maths, by this I mean proper maths, not things like statistics which is very limited in logical thinking.
What about those autistics who have a learning disability in Math (like me?) Are we "lesser autistics" than those who have a great gift with numbers...?
I don't see why you, or anyone, should say that Math is a "singular" thing for autistics. It also has a lot of meaning for NTs, especially more academically-oriented NTs.
I did not mean to offend you or imply anyone was a lesser autistic, i was generalising which i did say in my post. It is impossible when talking about anything as a whole to include every variation so to not upset everyone, especially when talking about autism which is so different for everyone. My generalisations were based on my life and my experiences.
Maths is typically seen as an autistic thing, you can't deny that even if its wrong for you, and how do you know that the nts that are extremely good at maths don't have any autistic traits. They might not be autistic enough for a diagnosis but i am sure their wiring in their brain is at least similar to an autistic that was also good at maths.
B"H
The worth of a human being is not what one does. It is who one is.

A utilitarian would think otherwise.
"The only thing that allows evil to triumph, is the indifference of good men".
How would you rate the worth of a kind person, who could stop a tragedy, but didn't because he was a coward?
Or someone with good intent, but caused much pain?
Determining someone's worth is not a one-sided decision. What you do in life, can also determine who you are. Although poetic, I believe your statement to be false.
ATM: As with any statement, one cannot interpret it too literally. Obviously, you are correct in the examples you cited. However, the example you cited of saving a life is decidedly non-utilitarian, since it has nothing to do with the great Golden Calf called "economic productivity."
All the best.
In other words, we are talking about "apples and oranges."
All the best.
I agree with Pikajedi, I think if they found a cure, it would be mandatory. I'm sure they wont offer any services for a curable disorder.
and you honestly think it would not be mandatory?
get real.
anything which cures this "awful, misery causing, life destroying, expensive disease" is going to be rammed down our throat's/veins quicker than you can say "human rights infringment"
Well said

and by the way Jay9 my son is nonverbal. He's the smartest child I know - talking isnt everything.
"not talking is not the same as having nothing to say"
Yep , lets pick and chose whose "special interests" are most valuable.
I'm going to assume yours are in this "Autism skilled jobs like computer programming, graphic desing, tech, anything in math, making TV shows like....Pokémon, ect"

Sounds right Ethel LOL
What exactly is meant by 'troll'? How do you know if someone is a troll? What is lulz?
