I can't believe this sort of thing is happening in the US as well. A 17 year old autistic boy is taken from his family and put in a group home

That is unbelievable.I feel a little sick now.I have recently self-diagnosed as Aspie.I was thinking of getting a Dr diagnoses.NO WAY now.I would have a hard time trusting a Dr.What if I got 'Dr Curbie'?Someone that wants to pick my brain or intitutionilize me and medicate me to see if they can make me all better.I'm fine the way I am.
I feel so bad for him.Any word how he is doing? Is he back with family yet?I can't imagine how he was supposed to benefit from the 'States' so called protective service. It's abuse plain and simple.I wish the family strength to endure this madness.
I believe its California for this case. I could see removing him for an investigation but a mental institution is not appropriate.

Is Orange County in California or are there other Orange counties?

Children can be removed from their homes to "protect them" while an investigation is being conducted on their parents and the care they are receiving.  If the parents had been giving this kid chelation while strapped down in "doctor approved restraints", would some people still feel outraged?

Somehow I don't feel that an institution for the criminally insane is really a place for a child with autism.  If he was violent, they would drug him.

Something is creepy about the whole story.  Maybe the kid was not treated well at home or in the institution.

Fascist pigs. If anyone tried to take my kid from me (assuming I had one) it would be over my dead body.
There has to be more to this story than is covered in the article. Child Protective Services only removes a child from a home when there is a serious allegation of abuse and/or neglect due to the inherent difficulty of getting a judge to sign off on it. They must sincerely believe that the boy is in serious danger if he remains with his parents. What this danger is I cannot say, but if I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it most likely has to do with either the testimony of the teacher or the "alternative" and "holistic" treatments. The testimony of the teacher is a good possibility because there is likely more to it than covered in the article. The treatments are also a good bet because of what "holistic" treatments can include. I've seen people try absolutely horrid things because they were "natural". The counseling could also be the culprit because it could very well include dangerous or unethical practices that would prompt a psychologist to recommend he be removed.

Thanks! Sorry for the delayed response and for the short and somewhat
impersonal nature of this reply, but I've been out of town and I've had
well over 100 calls and emails about this column. I will try to write a
follow-up in a future issue.

I don't have any advice on what they should do, but I am passing on any
related information or suggestions via email to the family.

um ... to be used for sincere offers of help and advice, of course.

I still think there is more to this story than is being said... I read the column twice and read something else about the story.
I think it was wrong to remove Nate from his home regardless... Children with Autism oftentimes cannot cope with abrupt changes to their rutines (but then again you all knew that)

Of course, once social workers are involved in a family, they are reluctant to relinquish their power – something I've found in every Child Protective Services case I've written about. And even though the court determined "the evidence is clear that the parents have always stood by and tried to help their son," the court sided with the government. That's another common theme from these closed family-court proceedings – the social workers' words are taken as gospel, and the parents are treated like enemies and given little chance to defend themselves.

Parents cannot complain either by revealing what happened in the secret family courts ,or by naming themselves or their children publicly without risking prison for contempt of the secret court.(Unlike more civilized countries such as Australia, New Zealand Canada, and Ireland where such secrecy in family courts does not exist) .

What!!??!! If the government hauls you into family court you cannot discuss your own case?! That certainly calls for civil disobedience of the highest order. If they've already got your children then there is nothing to lose.
