Am I the only one who doesn’t know what’s going on here?

It seems like I’m often making esoteric jokes that nobody gets.  But more often than that… I see people getting very emotional about some sort of social dramas going on in AFF that I am clueless about.  Sometimes I read through the posts but still don’t get what the fuss is about.  That’s okay. I just skip the threads I don’t understand.

Sometimes it feels like a time at college when I thought the code “TR” meant the class met on Tuesday & Thursday. I thought it stood for Thursday.  I had a vague feeling something was odd but didn’t realize I had been missing 50% of the classes until it was nearly over.    So.. that leads me to one theory that maybe part of the information that the AFF threads refer to were things talked about in private or in other sites. (I don’t do private messages.)

It’s strange like the office where I work, when I overhear that certain co-workers meet for dinner or go to each other’s houses.  After 15 years there, it still disorients me when I learn that some people at work are also connected away from work.

I remember someone complained about a type of poster they feel posts off topic or just makes jokes.  Perhaps I’m one.  But there are a lot of lurkers who don’t post. So, I’m  curious to know… am I the only one who doesn’t get what’s going on half the time in AFF?

Sorry. Ghetto edit: It should have read:

"I thought the code TR meant Thursday but it meant Tuesday & Thursday"

I’ve been involved in some pretty bizarre and controversy stuff myself recently. I’ve been upsetting people left, right and centre--and I can’t honestly say I know what’s going on. Something has changed--perhaps its me. I feel weary, confused and very disorientated; and have started to wonder if I’m only coming here out of habit--not because I actually belong. I’m not getting anything positive out of the experience and find I want to be here less and less. Every time I log on there seems to another  reason not to be here.

quickduck, you know that you are a very well liked person here, I could put many links to this effect but I don't think that it's necessary.

You have recently gone through a really horrible on and off line experience, one that many people would have found very hard to deal with. Throughout all of it you were honest, brave and behaved with integrity.

This is a horrible time of year, cold, miserable & gloomy not much sunshine etc. We all also live real lives which impact upon our feelings.
How about spending a bit more time in the fun threads instead of places that you feel are making life difficult for you?
Hopefully you might find that you start feeling like your usual self.Smile

WfM-you write so well and I agree.  :)
You are wise, positive, have lots of integrity and you are well liked here too.
Resilient comes to mind as well :)

Thank you, I can say exactly the same about you. Smile

Thanks WFM and Mahler5--good advice.
I don’t like the person I’ve become recently; and I don’t think anyone else likes him either.
Fun threads = fun duck.

See you there tomorrow. CoolBig Grin

Sorry about the above post- the computer was having a funny five minutes and I obviously pressed the wrong button.

I know what you mean. I can't pick out individual posters (when other people form cliques or claim to look forward to other people's threads I wonder how they managed to pull people out of the circuit so easily. I don't look forward to any particular people's posts, because I don't often distinguish posting styles)

I also don't notice if people on here are close friends, in a clique or haing a long row. I just don't pick up the dynamics very easily.

I have also made jokes in the past- and I think I have the tendency to jump in serious threads and make an un-original and silly joke.

You won't understand every thread. Some will be irrelevant, some (especially in the special interest areas) will sound like they're written in Double Dutch. Some will be about other forum members arguments, some will be about stuff that happened either ages ago, on a particular website or in another country.
As you said, it's best to just ignore any threads that you don't get.

Oh, it looks like my meaningless 'above post' has been deleted. (not the one directly above- I accidentally posted one before that that was just Silky's quote- I think.)

I'm confused now.

I'm even more confused - I haven't deleted anything, and the thread notes don't show that any actions have been taken... Perhaps it's a bug?

Either that, or the thread notes don't work...

It did cross my mind last night that I might not have posted a stupid unfinished post at all, and that I was actually looking at the Post Preview.
If this is news to you then that's probably what happened.

Either that or it might have sorted itself out. My computer was all over the shop- anything could have happened. I had no idea what I was doing.

I’ve just noticed a correlation.  The popularity of a thread (numbers of posts) usually is inversely proportional to my understanding of it.  The threads that are the most wildly popular are the ones I fail to understand in the slightest.  I’m not sure what to conclude from that.

I think some social phenomena goes on (bad or good) that makes some threads so popular.  I’m rather curious but don’t want to ask in the actual threads because it would sound rude to just say “Why are you people doing this? I don’t understand the point.”  I really don’t want to offend anyone.  Clearly they are getting some sort of reward.  I just don’t know what it is.

Well, the "Grumpy is opening the bar...celebration time!" is mostly silliness, and partly a place for people to say that they had a hard day and need sympathy.

Thank you so much for offering to explain that one, Doctorboy!  I did look in on it a few times and saw people pretending to order beverages but I couldn't understand why.  Especially when it kept going on for so many days.  I was ever so curious.

I don't get it either. There are a lot of cliques, a lot of in-jokes and many people who know each other either in real life or on other sites. I'm not a very frequent poster, so I'm miles out of the loop.

You're not alone.Big Grin

Oops, I forgot I'd already posted in this thread.

It's an old thread though. Who's the necromancer?

Guess that would be me.  If you back up to the post before yours, you'll see why.  I was trying to puzzle something out. Thanks for your thoughts again anyway Smile
