A parent had an ad for a nanny.  Their child has "sensory integration and social communication issues.  She wants someone to come a few evenings per week to develop fine motor skills, gross motor skills, and some other stuff.  I applied and said I have experience with autism.  (I didn't tell her that I have autism but that is my experience). I know that most kids with autism do have some sensory issues and social skills deficits.  The kid is four and goes to preschool.   Does this kid have autism or in the process of getting a diagnosis of autism?

I'll see if the mother calls me.  I don't tell parents I have autism because I don't want to experience prejudice and them all telling each other not to hire me.  I love kids and I want a job.
You can have sensory integration without having autism.

We (SLPs) were just asking the OTR about this subject this afternoon.  The OTR confirmed that one can have sensory integration issues without autism, although sensory integration in intragal to all aspects of learning.

I think it would be important to get an exact job description for this position. Would there be housework thrown in or would it just involve giving one to one attention to the child? For the purposes of learning, it would be preferable to have the latter but nanny jobs might also involve doing jobs around the house (could be worked into the learning plan to some degree though)
I never heard back.
I"m surprised you haven't heard back, M.  When I advertised for a nanny the application volume was quite manageable, and I talked to everyone.  I would make sure that the application was received.
