WELCOME BACK OCAMPO AND WELL DONE FO SOCKING IT TO THOSE B****RDS!!!!

Thank you  but I'm always fighting with something in *** real life - right now I'm having to fight with an ex employer that sacked me when I complained about someone bullying me at work... its gone to court now :'( why can't anything be *** easy lol

Lol! I did wonder but given that I always seem to be fighting with someone or another about some kind of injustice... lol
Hey abscout, just been on the autismspeaks UK site - what a patronising load of bull designed to make misinformed people feel like sh*t and delve into their pockets to donate (look at this child with big blue eyes... look how tortured he obviously is; I mean nothing to do with being forced to smile at the photographer eh). If you want any help then count me in, I get on very well with my sociology dept so if they want to start their crap again they'll have a good argument on this side Smile
Autism Speaks trying to shut down a site devoted to expressing, through parody, the views of the autistic community. That's not ironic at all.

w00t for it going back up!
A Thoroughly NT perspective here....

I visited the the NT Speaks site at one point when it was up early on and thought it truly brilliant on one level. I just couldn't get over how much talent and creativity the teens displayed in creating it.

BUT...

I also think it is foolish to parody the very people you are trying to  impress with your arguments/sway to your position and way of thinking. Parody begets defensiveness not receptiveness to new ideas.  One need only visit the threads related to it on Autism Speaks to see the negative impact of it.

Generally the only folks who find a parody amusing are those who are like minded to its creator.  Where the point of the site is to provide a bit of vent entertainment intended solely for other ASD it more than meets its goals, but if you have other purpose beyond this then I can't see it producing an overall positive effect... whereas I can see it producing a negative effect. I understand not wanting to allow Autism Speaks to bully you out of existence.
There is little point attacking someone if it equally makes you look bad in the process. I hope you are able to evolve it into something more positive on the reconstruct. I would far prefer to see the kids' considerable talent and efforts go to build something with a more positive spin and output.

Part of  the beauty of anbuend's piece.(at least to me) was that her video actually makes sense of the senseless. It gives meaning to behaviors the viewer presumed meaningless. It brings to understanding something previously unrecognized by the Neurotypical mind.
Anbuend's peice? i wanna see it.
The parody is famous by the way... it was in "new scientist" magazine.
But seriously, the above post has a very good point.  If you are a skilled site builder, make somthing BETTER than Aspeaks. make the REAL as speaks, tell them what it is really like.  doing this will help inform people of the truth and might stop thier misinterpretations.
And Show them pictures of real kids with autism whilest happy.
You can make a superior and true site!

Just one final point that's been bugging me for a while - very few of the things you refer to as "NT points of view" actually are. In this one in particular, I've heard autistics express the same sentiment as above, and I've heard NT's that love the site.

It's the same sort of gut reaction I get when someone claims to express the "autistic point of view". People are individuals, and no-one can claim to represent an entire neurotype.

About the only time the phrase might be relevant is when someone is asking a "Why do NT's do X?" style question - in that case, stating that you're NT is very relevant. Otherwise, you're solely representing yourself.

Sorry about that. After clipping the quote  I forgot to add the comment.

Comment is:  Fair enough criticism.
The thing to remember about the threads on Autism Speaks is that the people involved would say the same things regardless of the "tone" of the site - they say the things they do because they disagree with the premise (Autism Speaks = negative/ridiculous).

I think this is a fair observation as well. But I still hold on my position in suggesting it is difficult to convince someone of something when you are simultaneously offending them. I'm betting those NT's who liked the site it were already positionally firmly on your side?
