I have just watched a program on tv that was very interesting with links to Autism although there was no mention of it. The program was presented to me as making common every day decisions using maths, but it goes alot further than that. It covers a wide range on different scientific/psychological processes that are used to make decisions.
I found this program very interesting because it explained the way people's minds worked in a logical way that made is easy for me to understand and make sense. There were two parts to it that had large reference to Autism. One being the concept of using equations to solve mundane situations. I find it really interesting, now i think about it i could create my own (i have already found fault in Gareth Sundem's equations, mainly because they are not detailed enough to be relevent to my life) especially since studying statistics have given me the knowledge of how more complex equations work. I plan on creating a perfect equation for the situation of shopping when i have spare timw intelligence are given the change to enjoy intellectual topics.e.
The second part was about this woman who had suffered a brain hemorrhage. It had damaged part of her brain and caused her to think in a way i noticed as rather Autistic. She could only make a decisions based on logic, she was incapable of "acting on impulse", when making a decision she had to weight up all the positives and the negative (i mean ALL in an extremely literal sense) usually writing it down on a piece of paper because it was too much information for her brain to hold at one time. Also she became distressed whenever something changed from her plan because that changed a variable which she then made everything different when comparing the positives from negatives, also changes cause distress because it distracted her from trying to think about all the pros and cons. To illustrate this the program used the example of her going grocery shopping and if something was on special offer then she would have to make a decision of changing something that was on her list of what to buy to then save money or to not change anything on the list.
I do feel sorry for her that she has to do such a large amount of thinking that must be very strenuous for her, in the instance of having to make the decision not to change a previous decision.
(disclaimer: by linking a brain hemorrhage to Autism does not mean that i intend to link them in a way that suggests that Autism is caused by a brain hemorrhage or a negative thing like one, just think its interesting that the change in neuro-anatomy caused an Autistic-like behaviour)
There is a video on the link i posted at the start of this post that has the highlights of the program.
The program consisted of: (in basic order of appearance)
1.Maths equations, used in context of dating->those that used the equation succeeded in dating challenge, the one that didn't want to use maths didn't succeed -> conclusion=formula works, possible reason is it gave confidence.
used in context of shopping -> formula can be used to make the right decision in shopping, stopping impulse buying.

2. Loss theory; humans are motivated more strongly by loss than gain, in context of gambling challenge. Using certain words in giving a challenge will control outcome by amplifying the loss if desired behavior is not done.
3. Systeming, case study of woman explained earlier in post.
4.Manipulation; how temperatures affect decision making process and opinions of surroundings, experiment using holding a glass of either a cold drink->proves affect (warm temps cause people to be more positive)
5. Seeing into the future; theory that our decisions are made not just from past experience but from future experiences ->results in gut feeling.
experiment done to prove
example used of RAF
Really good proof on number 5, not that i needed it because i already believe in paranormal things.
I really really enjoyed this program. It very nearly everything i enjoy and love, all my special interests combined in one show!
Bit of a shame that the program was very simplified to attract people of low intelligence (i see that sentence in the metaphor of putting butter on bread in a sandwich to make it easier to eat, i feel no need for butter to maintain my attention) but i guess its only fair that people of low intelligence have the change to enjoy an interesting subject. I just stopped paying attention during the "pretty pictures and simple words" parts and concentrated on my very yummy chocolate mouse until the interesting part were on. I find it ironic how the parts of the program designed to convince people to pay attention did the opposite for me, heh
