Doha: The Shafallah Center For Children With Special Needs will be carrying out the first awareness campaign on autism in April to help people understand autism and recourse for families with autistic children.

The month-long campaign, which will be held under the theme, Together We Strive To Understand Autism, is sponsored by McDonald’s Qatar, the main official sponsor, which contributed QR100,000 for the event, and First Finance.

Deputy Managing Director of the Center, Sameera Al-Qassimi, speaking at a news conference yesterday, said: “The campaign aims at promoting awareness as well as correcting a lot of myths that depict the negative aspects of autism.” Al Qassimi said the campaign would also seek to enhance the role of families in dealing with autistic children by teaching them the most advanced methods with particular stress on family counseling.

Chadi Al Sayed, Media Consultant of First Finance, Mohammed Al Mannai, Salinda N De Silva, Finance and Administration Manager, McDonald’s Qatar, and Lama, PR at Shafallah Center, attended the news conference.

Al Qassimi said that statistics on children with autism, a developmental disability that affects the way someone communicates and interacts with other people, is currently under preparation and will be released soon.

A database on autistic children in the GCC countries is currently being compiled and the Gulf Autism Society is to eventually evolve into Arab Autism Society as several countries, like Egypt, Lebanon and Sudan have expressed an interest in joining such an institution, said Al Qassimi.

The paper will cover all aspects of assistance being provided to autistic children in Qatar as well as the diagnosis and treatments that are made available in different institutions in the country.

Currently, there are 56 autistic children enrolled at the Shafallah Center with 28 already attending morning sessions and 28 other awaiting the Center's assessment.

Al Qassimi also said that it is expected that thanks to the campaign more children with autism would join the Center, especially those currently attending expatriate schools in the country.

The campaign, which is to take place throughout the month of April, is intended for the general public, parents, and professionals in field of behavioral analysis, schools and universities.

The program of the campaign will comprise several lectures related to autism, exhibition of works by students from the Center as well as a three-day camp bringing together students from different schools.
