Pfft... Don't beg for mercy. That will make Autism Speaks think they actually have a valid case against you.

I see the possibility for a lot of good publicity for autistics in this; the whole "Autism Speaks Sues Autistic Person" thing would make for a pretty good headline.
did y0u ask t0 y0u there l0g0?

Copyright doesn't apply to parody sites - it comes under "fair use". For example, Weird Al is legally able to do parody songs using the same music as the original (he generally does ask permission, but only as a courtesy, and with a few exceptions).

Abscout, this is one of those things that is both a crisis and an opportunity.

It's entirely up to you whether to fight it or not (it is a bullshit charge, and it would be thrown out before going to court, but I understand that there's other sensitivities involved), but regardless of whether you choose to or not, go to the media.

This is a perfect opportunity to show people what Autism Speaks is all about.

Make sure you emphasise the figures they've exaggerated (1 million dollars lost revenue for 1 hit per day, etc), and the strongarm tactics used. Also, PM "Ethel" from this site (http://www.aspiesforfreedom.com/member.p...e&uid=5229), as she has plenty of experience dealing with the media, and should be able to give you more in-depth advice.

Also, make sure the blogging world knows about it - scan in the letter so you can show it to people, post comments on the more popular autism blogs and go from there.

Essentially, they've been rather stupid by sending you this letter. NT Speaks probably wouldn't have gotten much atttention, but threatening legal action definitely will.

Hit me with a copy of this letter too if you like. Autism speaks will be dealt with.
Parody is legal.

As for "Funds Lost", it's, if possible, even more stupid. They cannot hold you responsible for that.
Since this was farked (incredible) this is the opportunity to show Autism Speaks' true colors. The media has to see that letter. This is the opportunity to do so.
So much for supporting the autistic kids, eh? Until they grow up and say things you don't like...

You guys got Farked.  That means not only will there be tons of hits on this website, but news people will be looking here too.  I can see the headline: "Autism Charity Sues Autistic Child For Talking"

Better yet, "Autism Awareness organization 'Autism Speaks' sues child for speaking about Autism"

Yea, definitely get a hold of the ACLU, they have a whole team of lawyers that love to sink their teeth into things like this which clearly violate the First Amendment of the US Constitution, unless of course you're not in the US, in which case, find the prominent civil rights group for your country.

Today i received a legal document signed by 30 lawers global saying they are suing me for $90,000 reasons:
Copyright infringement
Funds Lost
And -1million Worth of Supporters Decline (cant be i got 1 hit per day on that site)

abscout - did you keep that legal document??? The reason I ask is:

Quote:
I wrote and asked Adam Pockriss, the public relations person for Autism Speaks, what it was all about. Here is Autism Speaks' official statement:

Autism Speaks, like every organization, is obliged to protect its name and trademark. The individual who used the Autism Speaks name and logo without permission was asked to desist, and he agreed to do so. Autism Speaks provides a valuable resource for families who have just received an autism diagnosis, for those individuals and families living with autism, and for the community at large interested in finding out more about the disorder, science, treatment and advocacy. If an improper use of our name or logo creates confusion among those we serve about the source of information they are seeking, it is a disservice to all.

I followed up by asking whether the person in question was, in fact, a 14-year old child with autism - and whether he was threatened with a lawsuit. In response, Adam replied "No, Autism Speaks did not threaten to sue."

abscout - is Adam lying?

You do realize they don't and won't release any information at all to you. For all they know you could be a media type. They want this to go away as it is greatly embarrassing. They will of course lie to cover themselves.

Even total crackpots like Dan Olmstead and Kim Stagliano are all over it:  http://www.ageofautism.com/2008/01/autism-speaks-m.html

Abscout's story is the number one google news result for the search terms "autism speaks" and it's on the front page of the regular google results for the same terms.  Actually, looking at the news results, we see that Autism Speaks is having a bad week- there's almost no positive stories; they're getting flak for the vaccine thing and what Trump said about it, for this story, and for where their money goes.  Now is the time to really push this story out into the mainstream- we have the opportunity to bring Autism Speaks to their knees.

I'd like to see this story in mainstream media outlets and newspapers...  yesterday I contacted an old friend who may or may not have contacts in the media...  she could potentially be interested in helping, as she has had experience in teaching neurodiverse students.  Perhaps could give me some ideas on how to "spread the word."

After sending it I felt a rush of "did I just do that?"... what if my message comes off as stupid or redundant.. or if she thinks I'm weird for identifying myself as part of this community...  Dunno.  I wonder if I'll get any response at all from her, in light of these suspicions.

This should be pushed into the mainstream. We members should send this story to the local newspapers, some magazine editors, other blogs, news sites etc.
