Some of the rest of the story of the Australian mother who murdered her autistic son can be read here

I found the Ray Martin interview nauseating too, but I find most Ray Martin interviews nauseating. I don't recall Mr Martin exploring the possibility that the mother herself might be in any way autistic or compromised.
With more information and understanding about what Autism
really is, the less likely crap like this will happen. Or more realistically: the less likely that crap like this will be
tolerated.
This is my main problem with groups like CAN - wouldn't their money be better spent educating people about Autism? That deep down we are certainly normal, certainly human, and certainly entitled to the same basic rights of NT's.
Even if these groups were to provide some educational efforts, the simple notion of a "cure" (which is practically their mission statement) has a dehumanizing effect, as the following quote illustrates:
Society devalues people with disabilities and their murders are viewed differently than the murders of nondisabled people. Society has an easier time accepting the justifications proffered by the killer when the victim has a disability.
Here's something else that's sick. Recently, a film came out "United States of Leland" where the main character gets sympathy for killing an autistic neighbor, both are teens in this film. I have no desire to see this crap, because it continues the devaluation of people with autisim, AS or other issues because they are seen as "less than human."
the problem is the word autistic still means "***" to most people, so they devalue autistics thinking "oh well, they're just retards who are of no use to society" and when an autistic is murdered rather then react in total horror sometimes people will be more likely to think "it's a shame, oh well"
Seems to me that if that's true, then shifts in attitude are in order for views of people considered "***" too. It's not as if it's any better for them to get murdered than autistics.
The Australian woman who got away with murdering her autistic son (and also got lots of sympathy from the Australian media) might not have got away with murder after all. Her sentence has been appealed.

Inspired by Eddie Griffin:
"What's happening my people! NT's killing us, kill 'em back. Peace, I'm outta here!"
How could that woman not know that something was wrong?
As an Asian-American involved in the Minority Civil Rights movement, this *** hits very close to home. In 1982, Vincent Chin got killed in Detroit because his assailants were racist against his nationality. His murderers were acquitted. If Vincent was a white man, the murderers would've been put in jail. Same thing with the treatment of black people. The KKK is still floating around, killing Blacks because of their race. Yet people don't do jack *** about it.
Autistic people are not a race, but also a minority. Like all minorities, we get treated like ***. That is why we need to stand up and FIGHT!
Omg.. bigotry against Our People is now international
Fellows,
I have a proposal, however crazy, I just have to get it out.
We could compile all those sordid examples and tag the same with such awards as:
 The "Goebbels Award" would go to the most blatant example of hate directed at these helpless people,
 The "Adolf Hitler" award would go to the most blatant example of violence,
 The "Josef Mengele" award would go to the most atrocious medical proposal or example,
 An "Arbeit Macht Frei" trophy would go to the party that inflicted the most suffering to a person before killing (or before the person died)
 and whatever names of other Nazi war criminals we could think of for different categories of atrocities
 Posters could give "sieg heil" salutes to individual featured items; the limit would be one salute per poster per item or thread. That could be made to work like the voting polls found here at the top of some threads.
The infrastructure for this awards system could be modeled after what is found in this link (irrelevent to the contents of this thread)

Got any other ideas? The Zyklon-B fumes sting my eyes worse that a heap of chopped onions ;-)
Killing autistics is a modern day witchhunt, like the war
on drugs. The media is the biggest problem, at least the
easiest one to see and be mad at.
I think the guy in "Slingblade" was autistic, but he
ended up killing an evil person. Great movie.
why cant we just live simple lives? NEURO TYPICALS SHOULD LET US!
You can't blame neurotypicals for everything, it is just not that simple.

Amen!
I am autistic with a diagnosis of 'mild retardation' and I don't fancy getting murdered / abused / bullied for either reason.
And of course it is not true that we are of no use to society. There are many schemes to help people with learning disabilities (some of whom will be considered '***') who want to work to find jobs, for example. Obviously these jobs are not going to be anything too 'fancy' but the point is that with the right support and with an employer with the right attitude we can work, study and participate in society - if it wants us.
There might be limits as to what we can achieve - but the fact is we can achieve.
I don't understand why even profoundly *** people should be any less worthwhile. They're still people. If you take them as they are, instead of some hypothetical should-be, there's nothing lacking about them.
After all, I don't pity my cat for being non-verbal--and neither would most people. Cats aren't made to talk. Neither are some people.
If we were just to stop thinking about the average and start seeing people as who they are because they were meant to be that way, then there would be a lot more acceptance.

We kinda are fighting. But the thing is that the neurodiversity movement is only a decade old. The civil rights movement for African-Americans is about five decades old (or 15 if you count the times when people were getting all worked up about slavery), the women's rights movement started in 1848 with the convention at Seneca Falls and is 160 years old this year. The fights for black rights and women's rights have gone on for more than 100 years and both groups still get treated like ***. With that in mind, it is understandable (but still wrong) that we autistics get the most *** from society. But that also means that we should fight harder for our rights so that it won't take a century!
