I agree with you.

Arguing in the way that is currently being done's not going to solve a thing; hacking's only an invite to escalation. I suppose that the best way to avoid it is simply ignoring them; laughing with them can work, but it's a little demeaning.

Ignoring seems like the best bet...

Male, and I assure you that this is a temporary interlude of lucidity.

oh, the Edit button was removed for the very reason you hint at, Desu - people would make a post, wait for the explosion, and edit the OP to make themselves look like the victims.

Aha - wouldn't the software display that they'd pulled such an evil trick though?

and the "E-spegers" wordplay?

I have to say it is apt, and is reached after a logicalconclusion. (ehem...:shiftySmile
and as i said earlier in the thread, whilst here it doesnt really happen, there are many forums where people will troll or just display refrigerator IQ levels, and then blame it on "Aspergers", usually spelt wrong one might add.

*cough*gaia*cough*. I'm sure that it wouldn't happen here (too many experts Tongue), but I've found that there's a fair number of the self-diagnosed (no sleight on those who are legitimately so).

I'm sorry to say that this is the case. Grr! Wink

What I think people miss here is that ED isn't just all talk. Apparently they have hacked into people's computers and posted personal information on articles they write. I contacted a lawyer about it and he said that alone could be considered illegal, giving out someones information without the person approving of it.
--
As for the freedom of speech thing, there is nothing we can do about that. They can continue to say things about us as they please, they can go on saying jews deserves the holocost or that black people are the n word. It's cruel, it's NOT funny, and it's all immature, but there's nothing we can do but ignore it. The only thing I wish I knew was why so many people can support a site that literally ruptured a blood vessel in my body. I love humor, and I love laughing, but what ED calls "lulz" is really nothing more than cheap sophmoric humor.
--
The only two things that could be used against them most likely have. That being the personal information, and hacking. Well, those and the whole "harrasing" thing. I hear some of the trolls over there repeatedly
called and harrased a girl who got mad at them and told everyone their ISP, which they try to hide and mask often I should mention.
--
My official stance on it is, let them do it. If they insist on calling their bigotry and racism funny, let them do it. They will get their just deserts eventually. Karma has a way of coming around.

Do not threaten legal action, for they will only laugh. Do not block their comments, for they will only mock you. Do not threaten them, for they will only screenshot it. Do not fight them, for you will surely lose.

The best strategy is just to become untrollable and ignore them. If you do not, you will lose. Just look at what happened to people like Snapesnogger.

Who is Snapesnogger?

My guess is from what I've seen, someone they trolled to the point where they ruined his or her reputation. But it's not uncommon. Cruelty isn't funny.

I just realized there's no "edit post" button. But I wanted to say does that name relate to Harry Potter?

Yes it does. Search for "Snapesnogger" on Encyclopedia Dramatica. I won't link to it because it has some nude drawings and I'm not sure about the rules here. It will illuminate why exactly it is a bad idea to try and fight Encyclopedia Dramatica.

It may be a bad idea to fight ED, but, I don't think it will always be. I mean they are already trying to pass laws that ban this kind of stuff, the last time they did it was almost passed. As much as I am for free speech, I just don't find how it's funny to say cruel things about people and then if they don't agree that it's funny they ruin your online reputation or something. But... what exactly did he do?

O DEAR GODS NO!! D:

No please why did you mention Snapesnogger? WRRRRRRRY!?

Damn. Well I will try not to make this too TL;DR for you guys. Heres the "short" version

Snapesnogger http://www.snapesnogger.deviantart.com/ and her new accounts http://owlgem.deviantart.com/

is a art *** for DA, she has huge as fan base and almost every Harry Potter fantwat and anime fanidiots licks her clit
<***Link Deleted - Zakkie***>
Despite it's harshness and cruelity as some would call it. The artical is pretty damn acurate. She's nothing more the self-asorbed, over indulgent, attention ***. She petty and arrogant she thinks she top *** and will gladly piss off anyone to say that she is made of win and awesome which she isn't.

Hence why ED knocked her off her pedastol.

Now I am netural with ED, I like there articals and I think to be **** hilarious. I just don't want to pick a fight with them and I ask people to seriously leave them the *** alone they will *** your ***, ten-ways from Sunday. Don't attention ***, don't pissed them off. Just do you thing and mostly they will lulz at use from a far.

Again I don't give two shits about ED, and I rather everyone else just ignore them. So far they haven't came back and spam-*** the community so can we lock and trash this Mmmkay

BW

Even if she was asking for it, the better thing to do is just to ignore her. ED goes to the articles and writes everything offensive in the book and expects people to laugh at it. Well some people don't, that doesn't mean they are butthurt it's mean it's not funny. I looked at the article of her and if she really was that way, who cares, it's not ed's place to police the internet.

They have indeed tried to pass laws, but they've all been shot down on free speech grounds. And even if they did manage to pass the law, it wouldn't have any effect because ED's servers are in another country. Because the servers are in another country, the laws of the United States would be difficult to enforce as other countries are not so willing to cooperate.

I agree with you that it is not funny what they have done to some people, but they really only do it to people who react badly. Everyone on the internet is bound to get trolled eventually, but most just ignore it. If however a person responds with flames and tries to go after the troll, they just become a target and attract more. That is exactly what happened to the people described on ED. They responded badly and just became "fun" for people.

What Snapesnogger did is centered around art sites like DeviantArt, y!Gallery, SheezyArt, etc. She drew nagas and Harry Potter characters in an anime style, which were often pornographic. While this is perfectly acceptable, she had a few "flaws" that attracted trolls attention. First, she was totally unable to accept criticism of her work. It wasn't even negative criticism, but instead suggestions like drawing shadows or smoother lines. She went ballistic when anyone said something about her work that wasn't outright adoration. This drew trolls to her like flies to honey. Second, she viciously attacked and stalked people that said anything about her. This only led to more flames. Third, she broke many rules on one of the art galleries, y!Gallery. During her time there, she was under age, something strictly prohibited as y!Gallery is adult in nature. She also submitted work featuring females, another prohibited activity there. These two things got her banned. Fourth, she tried to use ban evasion on DeviantArt and y!Gallery resulting in yet more drama.

My point is why should people have to be told to take something or get harassed? I mean I like Something Awful better, at least they try to make it remotely funny. With ED it's just "curse word, curse word, offensive term, lie, curseword". Is that really so appealing to people in their teens? It's human nature to respond to idiots and it's not right for them to be doing that kind of stuff and then expecting everyone to go along like flies.

Word to what you said,

If you don't react to them them they won't bug you the Ignoring Rule works well on them

Well I know ignoring helps, but I don't think these are the conventional bullies you deal with in school, they pursue their targets, to the very ends of the earth, as I've been told, at least. But, I'm not gonna get worked up over something stupid like ED. I don't think it's right, but, usually things amend themselves without action.

Oh, I don't advocate taking it at all, but I do advocate being smart about the response. If a person freaks out, it will only encourage them and there is nothing to be done for they are anonymous.

I think there is a line between outright cruelty and comedy. A parody is something like the Naked Gun series, not calling people horrible names and slandering them, even harassing them. I'd like ED to stay up for freedom of speech purposes.. but I am really getting tired of people justifying cruelty as "lulzy" material. People have feelings, I know it's impossible to fathom but it does make some people hurt, and it's not their fault either. I mean it's human nature to be sadened or hurt by something like that, and I don't understand why then, the very people opposing such a site are in the wrong. Don't get me wrong I love the meme's on ED, but I liked those on any site, if it wasn't for the majority of their articles being so.. negative, I would like it alot more. I'm more into light hearted comedy, not outright insults. I mean it's not like this is the roast of everyone online. Meh. I know people will object to me saying this but I just needed to get that off my chest.
