If you wrote a letter to them I'd add my signature to it Garath.  I don't want Autism Speaks with access to the people who made mapping the human genome possible.  Possibly we should raise this in their forums?  Let them know it might not be humanitarian to help AS?
Urgh.  They say "Basically, we are beginning to think of ASDs the way we think of cancer."

Could they have possibly put it in more offensive terms?

Yes, me too.  I won't do something on my own, because I don't trust myself to not just make an ill-informed tit of myself and embarrass the movement, but if someone else wants to start a letter/petition, count me in.

I just wanna be adored.

Someone hacked into my profile and did this!

Big GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig Grin I'm laughing with a sqeaky high-pitched laugh.

I voted no...of course......still 80%..Wink
I'm four years short of being adult, but I voted 'no' anyway. Every little helps.

Still 80% though.

I hope that percentage is high enough for that blinkin' 'charity' to think twice. I hope that it's a wake up call.
Doubt it though. I find that people who rely predominantly on propaganda are very good at 'playing deaf' when they hear something that goes against their cause.
Well, obviously it's Still 80%. I'm not daft enough to think one vote will up the percentage. I just wanted to make that clear Cool

I'm afterthoughting every post at the mo! WE NEED AN EDIT BUTTON!!!
Yeah. 80% No. we'll see how long this stays up.

Otherwise, the site seems to be more of the same Autism Speaks pap. It is really eerie how hard they are trying to APPEAR like they understand, while it’s clear that they don’t.

This site, like the Autism Speaks site, is trying to tone down the curbie rhetoric. Unfortunately, they can’t get rid of it entirely, since hope for a cure is where their income comes from. So they pussy foot around it.

I am especially taken by the whole “blood-letting vs. quinine” story they tell in the section about treatments. They are careful not to recommend trying to chemically cure autism, but they tell these little stories of how various “folk” remedies can sometimes become “evidence-based” cures. They even give examples of that happening with Quinine – but not happening with blood-letting. So, if you were thinking of buying some sort of supplement or alternative drug for your kid, go ahead. It might even become the cure we’re all waiting for!

Also, they try to do the same thing Autism Speaks does about Aspies. They try hard to draw a distinction between Aspergers and Autism. Anything to make it invalid for Aspies to represent Autistics to the public.

On one hand, it’s interesting to see them try so hard to avoid us and what we have to say. Perhaps it stings a bit. One the other hand, it’s amazing that so little actual change takes place with those people. They are kinda scary.

With reference to the above post, no, my aspies is NOT crippling. I have been able to do virtually anything a NT can do. I compensate for the disadvantages of social and other traits by use of my intellect. Which is my greatest strength.

The only real "crippling" part is LACK of ACCEPTANCE by others that I think in a very different way compared to an NT. And speak and interact differently as a side result. As such, some tasks that may take someone ages to accomplish I might have the gist of in a few minutes. Maybe that is seen as a threat or jealously. I just don't know. But I suspect so.

Re the parts I've bolded...I totally agree.

Sorry, but the link in the original post didn't work for me!

As for:

RE: Obnoxious curebie poll

I'm much less concerned about the poll than I am about their plans to use this:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/

I didn't find any problem with this body.

Nope, it's still there, but the OP forgot a trailing slash in the link, so this is the url you need:  ww w.iancommunity.org/cs/about_asds/
Link broken, so just take the space out and it'll work.

Dammit, Gareth, edit button PLEASE.
