I don't like it when the word retarded is used as an insult. It doesn't make sense, and it's insulting to compare retarded people to an organization such as Autism Speaks.

Yeah. It really is; there's a lot of self-respecting mentally retarded people who'd rather not be associated with autism speaks.

well.  I don't like the use of "retarded" as an insult.  "retarded" as in Down's syndrome -- well, people with Down's syndrome are almost becoming extinct due to prenatal testing and abortion or death cure.   If the people at autism speaks have their way, people with autism will soon become extinct.  If the way of thinking like people who support autism speaks was extinct, we would all be better off.

I don't think Down's people will ever be extinct; plenty of people never have amnio or CVS tests (especially because they're risky, and not recommended to younger moms), and plenty of people refuse to abort kids for any reason, including disability. Still, there are a lot fewer of them than there were; and that's sad. They have a right to exist, too.

i have to agree that the use of the word retarded is offensive. but thats what makes this thread so ironicly appropriate. autism speaks commercials are short-sighted and, in my opinion, flat out childish. the only way i can respond to such crap is with a more childishly bigoted response. because its the only language these bigots seem to understand. offensive bs for ofensive bs. sounds childish huh? thats because it is.

Prior to 1980's, kids on the spectrum were thought retarded. It is a hell of a thing to carry through schooling life.
So agree to the usage and like it all you like, but it is a nasty little position to take.

i regret starting this thread and would like to offer an appology.

while my intentions were good, my lack of tact and use of offensive language has obviously caused many to be offended. this kind of childish name calling serves no purpose and only further confuses the issue at hand. im sorry that i did not chose a more constructive means of discussing the matter. i am deeply sorry for my very poor choice of words.
