i could join you guys, but i can't get my mom to let me register for the Teen SL which requires a credit card. maybe once i turn 18 in July i can join. does regular SL require a credit card number for "validation" like Teen SL does?

No, regular Second Life only requires a valid email address. Though age verification is in its beta (verification of age so that land owners can keep unverified people off the land if the land contains adult content) but I dont think many have verified yet. you dont even need money inworld, freebie clothes and gadgets are everywhere Smile

Hm... I'm on Second Life every now and again. I'm not exactly on there frequently, and I'm not too good with the controls... But I'll see if I can drop by and lend a hand, I guess.
Oh, I'm legal age. I had to be to legally join. I just don't spend much time on SL.
Writing to some SL news sites and blogs may help our cause.
Contact info pages for some of the known ones:

The Avastar - contact info
The Metaverse Messenger (you have to download the newspaper in PDF. contact info is on page 5 where it says we can write letters to the editor)
The SL Herald - staff list (maybe we could contact one of these people inworld. though they might be a bit biased toward Daphne because she was thier Post 6 girl once)
Brutal Honesty Blog

And we still have to write to Torley Linden. I'd do it myself but I dont know what say Sad
I've had a quick look at the main donations box where they're attempting to fundraise from - at the moment they've only raised about 600 linden, which is the real world equivalent of around two dollars.

If we are going to protest this, we'll have to make sure we aren't just making a non-event more popular - i.e. use PM's to Autism Speaks group members, etc, rather than just the usual sort of noticeable protests.

Perhaps a garnering of support for Aspies for Freedom would be more appropriate than a denouncement of Autism Speaks?
I have spoken to Daphne on SL and she has told me that Autism Speaks have told her that they don't want her using their name and she told me she will be withdrawing the donation kiosks.  She is still really interested in helping spread awareness about Autism and told me she will be changing the name of the group and will welcome any input from adults with autism and help in creating a big fundraiser.  It sounds to me like she is welcoming advice, information and input from people about what to create and where to send money that will appreciated by the whole community.

From what she said she is new to all of this and didn't know about the controversy with Autism Speaks.  I thought it was a good idea to get this out publically, as she also told me a few people have not been so nice with their messages to her, and I really think she's gotten to a stage of understanding now and if this works out it will be a really good thing for the autistic community.
I've seen about a dozen donation kiosks so far. I know where a few of the poular ones are. There isnt a main one per se, just ones that have raised more than the others. The most I've seen in one is about L$11,000.

The only thing Daphne is interested in is HER reputation. Full Stop.
It's possible that her 'subs' haven't logged in for a while and she was looking for something new to be in charge of, which of course her new 'sub' is her Autism Speaks fundraising Big Grin.

*saves more character attacks on Daphne for later*

She actually seemed quite reasonable when I spoke to her.  She also told me she is in the process of trying to track down all the booths, because Autism Speaks doesn't want her using their name... That was only just yesterday, so it might be a good idea to let me know of the booths you know of so the kiosks can be taken down.

Known kiosk locations so far;

Nicky Ree (both stores)
Nonna Hedges Gowns
Dragonfly Designs
Matika's Textures
The Perfumed Garden Escort Club
Daphne's Delights
BRAINBOW
Balderdash - Bagatelle & Trinketry
Orchid Dreams
Savoir Hair
Whispering Winds
Amaretto
Club Activ8, Activ8 Welcome Area

(Just type these in places search)
It's a good idea to add SL name to the profile here. I just updated it.  I will be interested to see what this new group that she was talking about will be like.
Great news. Smile

Sounds cool. I may come by to hang out, if I get around to playing SL in a while.
That's a wonderful result Gareth.  I did ask her about the rude people the other day as well, but I haven't been able to get on SL since.
Oops, my bad. I haven't really gotten into it, so I still have much to learn about using it. Tongue
For those that didn't read the link, it's about someone stealing copyrighted 3D designs from an SL shop owner in the name of Autistic Rights.

I did about the only thing that would work to help prevent this from spreading - I offered my condolences.

Here's my message:

_____________________________________________

Hi Laynie,

I'm a person that often protests against Autism Speaks. As such, I'd like to join the others here in expressing my sorrow at the actions of the person that did this.

I suspect that part of the reason this happened is that many of us made an unofficial decision to leave these kiosks be, and some people were quite annoyed at this.

There are some quite angry and bitter people around, and you have been the victim of one of them. You are quite obviously a good person, doing what you believe is right - and that should be respected.

Even if you leave the theft aside, I cannot believe that someone would protest against you without bothering to contact you first.

If you are still interested, I have some more solid reasons why Autism Speaks is a damaging organisation, and I will be happy to post them here, but only at your request. If you are sick of discussing autism, I will simply reiterate my outrage at the twit that did this, then leave you in peace.

- Zakkie.

The incident is being misrepresented badly, if you view the alleged stolen items the original creator tag is still set, thus it was not stolen - it was copied from a lawfully purchased item that the creator set the "next owner can copy/transfer" flags on. To steal an item in SL requires copying it client side and this assigns a new creator tag to the item. It is simply not possible to copy an item in SL without the owner's consent while retaining the creator tag.

Furthermore, I have seen the logs where the threat of boycott came only after Laynie showed her clear intent to not listen.

Only after Laynie actually filed an abuse report for harrassment which resulted in a temporary ban that was subsequently overturned on appeal did this escalate as it has now. The way in which Laynie is misrepresenting this incident as "fanatic stole my stuff and gave it away without explanation" and then pledging to donate MORE to autism speaks as a result in my view makes her fully deserving of further boycotts.

Please do not "aid the enemy" by apologising to laynie for a legitimate  form of protest. I will also mention how everyone in the major autistic groups inworld was banned from several stores including AFF.

Ah, that's a bit different - sorry about that. I'm not really too familiar with Laynie, so I only had the blog to go on...
