What would you think of it on a human? Does it sound like a boy's name or a girl's name or both? Do you think it be okay for someone to name their child it?
I wanted to name my child that but my boyfriend wouldn't let me because he said our child would get teased and no way he is naming our baby after a city. He won't even let me name our girl London and I wanted to name my kid Spokane after my favorite city but at least he is letting me to name our kids after the Benny & Joon characters.
Spokane seems like it fit a girl better than a boy but I think it be a boy and a girl's name because it means "Children of the sun."
Even my mother took my boyfriend's side because she agreed with him that it won't be a good name to name our kid so she suggested I can name our child after a place in Spokane and I thought "Ferguson" but I hate that name on a human. It's fine as a last name but first name, ugh. So I decided I can name my kids after the movie. Juniper, Benjamin, Sam or Ruthie.
(No I'm not pregnant)
Spokane sounds like a girl's name to me aswell, but I agree that it might be a risky one in the schoolyard.
Sorry, when I dirst heard the name I thought it sounded weird even for a city.
I believe it is extremely important to consider the name from the child's point of view. Going through life with an eccentric label makes childhood even tougher than it is already. I would go so far as to avoid any name that has been given to famous fictional characters even if I liked the name.
I go so far as to weigh up potential embarrassmen from the initials. Bernadette Ursula sound wonderful - unless your surname begins with M or T!
I'm having fun with the norwegian name Nils. Using "Nils" when I'm writing in norwegian and has to talk about somoene who's either female or male (he/she). "Nils" is however a boy's name.
I live near Spokane. In fact, we just went there today. I hate to be the one to say this, but the place is nothing exceptional or special. That's just my point of view though.
One other reason you may want to reconsider this is that outsiders hardly ever get the pronunciation right...they tend to call is Spo- CANE, when it should be said Spo-CAN.
However, it's also not all that bad as names go, and your boyfriend really doesn't have the right to deny you naming your baby whatever you want to. Sad to say, I bought into the same mind trap and my ex husband named DS #2 Hilmur. Ugh, what an ugly name!
A few street names from Spokane: Ruby, Francis, Trent.
Or, IIRC, there is a Spokane Indian tribe...you could select a name from their language?
What's so special about Spokane is:
They had a world's fair there in 1974
They have this huge Radio Flyer wagon that is a slide.
Benny & Joon took place there.
It's a cheap place to live, good place for students to live

Could be worse. Could be "Walla Walla."
LOL!
The problem with "Spokane" as a name is that the kid might end up being called "Spoky", which he or she might not like. I don't see Spokane as any worse than Dakota or Montana or Madison
I suppose if you called a boy "Spokane", you could shorten his name to "Kane". There's far worse names you could call a child, that's for sure.

No worse, no... but surely no-one would give their child such horrible place names?

But it is not pronounced Spo-cane.
Call him ShinRa
It's more or less the same thing as Lucifer anyway.

Maybe not where you are but that is how we pronounce it in Australia.

Fair enough, except that the place of Spokane, WA, isn't in Australia, it's here, about an hour away from me.
