That's scary, especially considering it was produced by a university.
It's a horrible ransom note about Autism, how do these people feel about themselves. I don't think they care about who they hurt. We are also affected by autism, because we can understand what they write they don't seem to think we have it. They forget we live on whats called a spectrum, hmm...maybe they don't know what that means. Having low functioning autism can be hard on parents and I know a few who are living in some pretty bad situations at the moment. This is just hurtful to everyone, be it people with autism, siblings or parents.

To all you people who came up with this horrible stuff at New York University, I hope you feel some sort of guilt to the thousands of others out there with autism who can understand this, shame on you!

Hi multiverseuk!

WELCOME!

Well... I'm new to this site and I just got diagnosed with AS a week ago after years of wondering what was supposedly 'wrong' with me. As if the world wasn't scary enough to me at times.... and then I see things like that picture and everything just seems a whole lot worse. I'm not even 'out' to everyone yet and I wonder how people will react, especially if these images are in society. At the same time I feel lucky because I live in the UK and they'd never allow some ransom note advert like that (I think) because everybody wants to be politically correct.

I think you are right, in Ireland there would be a lot of trouble over something like that. It does happen from time to time though you will get the odd thing. This is on a much bigger scale IMHO. I would hate for something like that to get out. What type of people are they? I think they are, cruel, dysfunctional, hurtful and everything else but caring.

D'oh and Welcome multiverseuk! Wink
The people who put up these ads -- clearly their intention is to create fear in order to generate financial gain.
They have also made ransom notes for bulumia, ADHD, Asperger Syndrome specifically...

There have been lots of reactions in the Autism Hub blogging ring. Especially from the Autism Vox blog.

Why don't we do something to form the public perception of autistic people? All it requires for evil to prevail, is for good people to do nothing.

These ads raise attention because their provokative. Might it also be provokative if we break stereotypes in a maybe humourous way.

You make a strong point erkolos.

I'm thinking that you can't actually remove stereotypes, but you can create MORE under the word 'autistic'.

I think it's really cool how many people on AFF has challanged stereotypes in many ways like Xanderbeanz signature "I'm such a geek, but no one cares cuz I'm so HOT!". And the "satanist-like" personalities of Ian and Meiloyn where I remember one of them once said something like "If I had discovered my sarcastic-self back then, I would probably have.... [something to someone who was behaving ignorant]" and many other things.

Someone said that a good way to relieve stigma is to use humour.
