How many people here, find classical music is something that everything else just falls short of?
I'm a big fan of Fantasia (Not Fantasia II), I have it playing in the background all the time. I have a record player hooked up to my stereo system. Its paradise, and while I have a lot of recent music I like. I find Classical Music is, and can produce such unique sounds and harmonies that you can't find in todays artists.
I have always preferred calssical. Whether orchestral or single-instrument, the sheer hard work that goes into writing it cannot be bettered.
However, to be fair, all the rubbish that was written at the same time as the great stuff has been rightly lost, but all new music is played, regardless of merit, because otherwise a judgement as to its quality cannot be made.
For example, although I remember the 70s and 80s as decades of truly terrible dross, my youngest two, born in the 90s, think that the music written then is far superior to modern stuff - because only the best survived to be played now.
I love to hear classical music played live, loudly and in a moderately small sized hall.
Ever since I was a teenager (I will be 25 in March), I have listen to very little but classical music. Used to be hooked on ABC Classical FM, a radio station we have in Australia. I am particularly a fan of Baroque music as played with period instruments. Composers wise JS Bach is my favorite, I love especially his Cantatas. But I enjoy other 18th and 19th century composers as well.
I've only been to one classical music preformance in my life and that was a free one playing a work by Tchaikovsky. I live in a city of only 90,000 people and I do not have the money go to the Opera in Melbourne which is 150km from where I live. I would love to attend some classical music concerts being held locally, however have not gotten the time or money to do it.
I like all sorts of music.
i love orchestra's but find the harmony in much of the classical period a bit basic/predictable/lacking...i guess it was only when debussy came along and started whacking crazy chords in his compositions that things really got interesting...x
The first movement of Beethoven's 8th symphony - The best piece of music ever written?
I find that some classical composers are yes, predictable. I find this isn't such a bad thing with Bach or Tchaikovsky. Both I find if you get into a pattern, you can almost be sure they play some sort of strange melody as a change. Tchaikovsky in particular changes tempo and octaves in his music as much as a runway model changes clothing.
Personally I hate the violin, horrible thing to play. But it has great music and I like to listen. Yes, the work that goes into perfecting this instrument is amazing.
More people POST, even negative stuff. We all have opinions!
Beethoven is one of my favorite classical music composers. His 8th symphony was the best! I like the first and second movement of "Pathetique".
I honestly think that all music of today (especially metal) is based wildly off of classical music. The same slow song dynamics used in Beethoven's 8th Symp. 2nd Mov. is uses very much today, if you listen carefully. In metal music, such as Nevermore or Morbid angel, it is bluntly obvious that there are some classical elements to their music.

But then, there is alot of music today that is just like that, basic/predictable/lacking. Music has, sadly, always been like that for the time period it was created.
If the violin is played correctly and it is one of the instruments that is made out of a decent wood such as oak then the results are pleasant.
I never had much luck on mine. This was both due to the wood (made in China) and my lack of coordination.
As for music the classical music I only listen to a few tunes, and then repeat and thus am about as unknowledgeable about music as I am about other popular cultural issues.
Pachabel: Canon in D
Smetna: Die Moldau
It seems that the tradition has also been well preserved in the Hollywood film industry, hardly a bastion of culture.
"The Truman Show" musical score is particularly appealing to me.
"Dances with Wolves" had some nice music as well imho.
I like Romantic Era music (1815 to early 1900s), the best, though some Classical and Baroque Era music can be pretty good, too. 20th Century Neo-Classical music can be quite good.

I don't like many of the 2nd tier Classical Era composers for that reason, though a lot of the music from the Classical Era greats (Mozart, Hayden, Beethoven, J. S. Bach's grandson C. P. E Bach, etc,) is good (there must be some music gene running in the Bach family, so many great composers!).
I like Beethoven, especially Fur Elise and Ode to Joy! I love them... especially when performed on a piano...
And Pachabel's Canon... like someone already said...
Classical music seems to calm me... as does metal. Eh. *shrugs*
