Hey, at the very end of the blurb going with the Newsweek letters, it says "A girl with Asperger's asked for understanding: "I am autistic. I don't want a cure. I want people to accept that I'm different, not diseased".

I don't know for sure if that is me since it doesn't give a name, but I did write that in the letter I sent to them. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Was it online too, so we can read it? We don't get Newsweek in the UK.
Were these letters a response to the Newsweek feature "When does autism start?". That feature was published in Australia in the Bulletin March 8, 2005.
Good onya Cat!
I can't find the letters online. (It only shows me letters for the March 21st issue) This was in the March 14th issue, in response to the autism issue. The letter I sent was longer then that, but they published that part in the end of their "mail call" blurb. Newsweek publishes a letters page, with a light brown box with a one paragraph summary of the most popular commented on topic.
Hooray for you, Cat! And thanks for posting the link!
I noticed one parent wrote that her autistic son would have a better future if he had AIDS.

Keep on writing letters, everyone, the ignorance out there is appalling.
"I noticed one parent wrote that her autistic son would have a better future if he had AIDS."
The way some parents talk is truly astonishing. Imagine the child hearing that. It is also an insult to children with AIDS who have limited lives because of their condition and the ignorance of others.

I know. I had a problem with that when I was looking through that Newsweek. It inspired me to grab my Model Magic and make a "neurotypical health prson" and toss it and squish it and yank it apart and make jokes about it to let off some steam.
