we have come to the day we have all feared. the day when we rise or fall.
their is a law called the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill  before the UK house of parliament Clause 14 states :

" Persons or embryos that are known to have a gene, chromosome or mitochondrion abnormality involving a significant risk that a person with the abnormality will have or develop—

    (a) a serious physical or mental disability,
    (b) a serious illness, or
© any other serious medical condition,

must not be preferred to those that are not known to have such an abnormality."

this that any embryos that have autism (or a fare posabilty of it) could NOT be used .

so this is it I feel that if we do not try NOW we'll just slip in to that dark nite
How do we start an 'ABOLISH CLAUSE 14' movement?

we must stand strong with our Deaf brothers and with all those that are not seen as "normal".

LIFE WAS NOT MEANT TO BE SIMPLE OR EASY

Anyone got further info on this?
Which MPs are supporting it? At what stage is it in parliament?

As a person who is autistic and proud of it I object to the section in clause 14 of this which states:
" Persons or embryos that are known to have a gene, chromosome or mitochondrion abnormality involving a significant risk that a person with the abnormality will have or develop—

    (a) a serious physical or mental disability,
    (b) a serious illness, or
© any other serious medical condition,

This could mean that embryos which show signs of autism could end up not being used which discriminates against autistics.

Also, autism is made into a "serious...mental disability" by the bad attitude of society which is extremely prejudiced towards people with autism and which rarely if ever, makes the adjustmetns and accommodations we need to be able to fulfil our potential and exist as equals.

The DDA is very biased towards physical disabilities and makes little specific provision for people with autism.

Surely these things should be rectified in preference to just limiting the number of autistic people that are brought into the world?

Autistic people have a lot to offer the world. We consider ourself to be a different kind of human, a variation - we do not consider ourselves "sick" or "disabled".

We have our own culture and we have just as much right to exist as everyone else.

We therefore believe that autistic embryos have as much right to be brought into the world as non-autistic embryos"
Thank you aliengirl.

This is an eloquent plea for equality:

i'm shocked by this!
god the UK used to actuslly be a democracy not a facist run government another reason for me wanting to immigrate!

but still is there a way for us get rid of this discrimination?

also aliengirl good letterBig Grin

I'am thinking about a second life Protest to start with just help get us united.
but then what ,letters ,slogans, four tons of nuts and bots* droped off  in front of number 10** Wink
WHAT !
we need is ideas

*or something else ? Wink
** just joking
An SL protest will not do much besides spoil credibility and causes problems for completely irrelevant people. Unless you can show the UK government has actually purchased a sim and have a means to present a petition there, it's no use. A petition to the UK government is already gathering signatures......
We need to get the NAS to give a position statement. What about the all party parliamentry autism group?
From a quick check of the NAS website, it looks as though the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill has slipped under their radar.

It looks as though they've been briefing and lobbying about the Mental Health Bill, about social care, education, disability discrimination and the like:

http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=158
http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=711

But it doesn't look as though they've done any briefing or lobbying against the possible eugenics implications of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill.

They haven't issued any press releases about this either, neither in November:

http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.j...51&a=14939

nor in the past few months although I haven't checked the whole of 2007:

http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=1251

It looks as though most of their press releases are really fluffy PR jobs, highlighting various projects, at first glance there isn't anything that objects to the potential for 'not exercising preference for' i.e. specifically ruling out implantation of embyros that have autism genes.
Well, is there a way to get it in the NAS's radar?
