WHEN Anya Kaluyeva, a Russian primary school teacher, was summoned to her boss’s office last week, she expected to discuss a new set of textbooks. The conversation quickly took a more sinister turn.

The head teacher asked the 48-year-old whom she intended to vote for in today’s parliamentary elections. When she hesitated, he ordered her to support United Russia, the party backed by President Vladimir Putin. He then issued a warning.

“He made it clear that if I didn’t vote for United Russia I’d lose my job,” said Kaluyeva, a mother of two who lives in a small town south of Moscow.

“I was so shocked I was left speechless. He put me under pressure and hinted that he had ways of checking who I’d voted for. I felt I was back in the Soviet Union.”

Didn't get to bed last night
Oh, the way the paper bag was on my knee
Man, I had a dreadful flight

You don't know how lucky you are, boy
Back in the USSR, yeah

Been away so long I hardly knew the place
Gee, it's good to be back home
Leave it till tomorrow to unpack my case
Honey disconnect the phone
I'm back in the USSR
You don't know how lucky you are, boy
Back in the US
Back in the US
Back in the USSR

Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the west behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
They Georgia's always on my my my my my my my my my mind
Oh, come on

I'm back in the USSR
You don't know how lucky you are, boys

Like I've stated before:

The American-Chinese trade cycle doesn't include Russia, or the other former East Block nations for that matter. Dictatorship is the natural result.
Simen; what Ian meant was;

big, rich country boarders smaller, poorer country
big country isnt afraid to use force and intimidation to get its way
smaller country has something big one wants
big one uses brute tactics

different country, same government!
That's not apparent at all. It was in the context of rigging elections, which is an interior issue, not a foreign policy issue.

I don't suppose you have an argument for that, too?

China buys American debt, controls internal production, pegs currency against U.S. dollar 4 yuan: 1 dollar. The U.S. consumers help float the debt by paying taxes that support the debt/ banking structure, and continue buying Chinese goods.

Well, first of all, you haven't got your facts straight with currencies, so either you're projecting into the future without giving any justification for your predictions, or you're plain wrong.

Second, how is this supposed to naturally lead to Russia becoming a dictatorship?
Well, I suppose that I'm just plain wrong then. You know, actually, I was born wrong and from that point have got everything wrong including the current exchange rates.

I believe that China buys U.S. dollars in order to peg her exchange rate outside the normal currency trading system. That much I may have right. Anyhow, I heard that much on the Glenn Beck programme (U.S.)
