...and I know there are quite a few of us on AFF, so I was wondering if I could ask you guys for some help.

I'm doing a big big huge project for my Health/Careers class; we have to write a long research paper on a health-related issue. About half the class is going to regurgitate their class notes on drugs and alchohol abuse, so I didn't want to do anything like that. At first I thought about an anti-autism-cure paper, then an anti-electroshock-therapy paper, but then I decided to just write a paper about the all-around corruption of the psychiatric "help" system. But since this is not a widely-discussed topic, I don't really know where to start looking for sources.

So, if you guys know of any websites or books that could help with this, I would be very grateful. Also, if you have any quotes or thoughts that I could add, I'd be grateful for those, too. (You would be credited, of course.)

In short words,What did yopu think was corrupted?

I bet there's some psychiatrists who might abuse their authority, I have however had a rather pleasent experience with psychiatry.

me too,mind you,as a grown up.

Shrinks are for short-term care ONLY. Age and experience and doing the right reading (the RIGHT self-help books, not the narrowly defined ones that help you grow wealth (isn't that ungrammatical?) or are religious-based mainly) will eventually see you through.  Being totally honest with yourself AND OTHERS will teach you much, what you need to know really.

The best shrinks simply pose the right questions, and are NOT tied to any one philosophy- Freud or Jung or whatever.

As of now I would argue I know more about AS than Hope's shrink in Atlanta. I would bet good money on it.

Also, what I have found with shrinks is they tend to subtly favor the party who pays (parents or the "decider" in the family, whoever that is). This is patently dishonest imo.

I also knew a too cock-sure, arrogant shrink once who took CALLS while supposedly observing my daughter.

Many have their own prejudices which they can't sublimate.

I am also pretty confident I won't need them myself in the future based on what I've said above. I feel I've turned a corner, not that I used them THAT much in the past. Also, many reach a point where they no longer feel the need to spill their guts to near complete strangers. It's oddly embarrassing, unless of course you really need the help. Like school you get rather tired of being analyzed, judged and (theoretically) graded (as it were). That's why I'll never take any academic courses again for credit. I had 20 years of academics so I know whereof I speak....

Make that: " Like school you get rather tired of being analyzed, judged and (theoretically) graded (as it were) by folks that may or may not be your better intellectually or spiritually."

Please don't pull that "grown up" line on me; I'm sick and tired of people doing that. *I* have had experiences with psychologists, too, and they were nightmarish. But even after that, I didn't give up on psychologists in general until hearing about numerous others' experiences that were even worse. Just because I'm fourteen does not mean that I pull my opinions out of a hat.

I think, in context, that Emmy meant she had a pleasant experience with psychiatry "as a grown up", meaning that her childhood experiences with psychiatry weren't very positive. I don't think she was meaning to imply your age had anything to do with your opinions...

In any case, best of luck with the project!

I never ment to hurt you,I should have expressed my self in a different way.
It is never easy to know what other people think.
What I ment to say was:
I personally did not have much effect of the treatment I got because of the treatment I was treated with at that time as a child, but now the treatment I resive is good. The point in the text was not about the age ,but it had something to do with qualily of different treatments.
