Something tells me that with some numbers about how much money is spent on different things related to autism we could actually convince people that less money should be spent on research and more money spent on helping troubled autism families more directly.

What has autism research ever done for you aside from a diagnosis?

There might be good research out there, but something tells me that money is spent on alot of crap aswell.
This is why research and research grants should be completely transparent. And even when they are, there should be some central mechanism that logs it, so that we can, at any given time, look up how much money is being spent on X research versus Y research.

Just go to Cure Autism Now (or Autism Speaks)  (Are they the same organization now?)  and see their financial report for 2006 posted up there.  They still have the "Autism Everyday" video on their website which they co-produced.  They pay their "officer" a base salary of $300,000 per year (US dollars) with a optional bonus of $50,000 per year as approved by the board of directors.  Three of CAN's officers receive salaries of $488,000 per year plus benefits.  Their luxury office space in New York City costs them $206,700 per year.  (I wonder if that included parking).

Oddly they received $7.5 million for research on autism from the Department of Defense.  The only support they show for families is by supporting (or funding???) local websites that might list where families can get a diagnosis or "Hair salons that are accommodating to children with autism".  This can be done by volunteers from their own homes.

They raised over $13 million last year from walks/retailers and over $19 million dollars from donations and other events.  -- and that is the best they can do.  Besides paying themselves well and giving $13,982,851 to research.  Some of the research projects funded include an experiments on voles, mice and rats.  I didn't see any research on primates for 2006 but I could have missed them or they were worded ambiguously in the descriptions.  Still genetic research is being done and many projects on behaviour.

I will not be supporting them.  Autism Speaks opened an office near where I live.  Their resource list does not exist.  It is only a form for people who have resources they would like to advertise to fill out.  I am going to find out more about this office.  They had a walk that raised over $600,000 here.  Are people so stupid?

That's very interesting, where can people get information like that?
